Loading MS Office on a gaming machine
« on: February 06, 2008, 08:41:07 PM »
Any negatives to loading MS office on a gaming machine?

Going to build an E8400 machine. My problem lies in the fact that I have only room for two machines in my home office. Mostly it concerns overloading the house circuits. Right now I have two comps, subwoofer, printer, monitor, scanner, usb hub, and router all plugged into the same circuit. It is wiring of cosmic proportion.

You might want to disable findfast after its installed.

Personally I don't let anything start when windows starts except needed drivers.

There are several software solutions out there for cleaing up startup list.

That's an interesting point Ghost. I use FSAutostart to kill background processes. Could you name one that would do the same for the startup programs?

Thanks in advance.

I thought you CAN turn-off startups with FS Autostart. If not, you can always do it manually by way of START>RUN>msconfig and deselecting items under the start tab.

In any event, MSOffice should cause you no problems with that CPU.

Do not install 'find fast'.  Do not install the office toolbar.  Kill the office startup in the Start->Programs->Startup list.

Should be ok after that.

There is a LONG list of software that can help manage your computer. Some are one trick ponys, some do a whole series of things.

Some of my favorites are
XPtools
Startuplist
Registry Mechanic

Best is to not install it in the first place, second best is to cripple the problems once installed.

Another thing to think about would be to setup a separate user for Office
vs flying/gaming.

Then its as simple as switching users to use office.
Do a reboot back into the clean side to fly.

MS' user setup is flawed to say the least. MS software itself is pervasive. MS installing its own software on its own OS? Color me skeptical.

On the other hand, MS Office is important (even vital to some) and is not a luxury you can just "leave off" most of the time. Your best bet is just killing the toolbar, the auto-load shortcuts, and all that stuff. Start whatever application you want manually and you'll be good.

I've been doing that for years.

Open Office will install startup items too. Regardless, Open Office or MS Office, all the hand wringing over installing either is amusing.

Open Office is nice an free and I've recommened it to people on a budget to use who can't afford Office.  I've used it a little, but I've still been using my Office XP disks for coming up on 5 years now.
