Another Film For Analysis
« on: January 13, 2008, 09:00:19 PM »
Hey guys, I had time for a quick duel today.  Anyway, any analysis/tips/suggestions as usual, you know how it goes. lol

http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/36921/film133-ahf.html

My thoughts.

On the merge, it seemed like he got inside of me on the first immelman, so I was thinking that I would have more E then him, so I went up for another immelman to gain position.  I then lost sight of him at about 3:15 and reacquired him as I was about to stall out.  At that point I was trying to keep it at least level so I wouldn't fall beneath him.

3:35 re-merge.  Seemed like he kinda flat turned, so again I immelman/oblique turned to get top position on him again.  I think I gave up a really good opportunity at about 4:00 into the film to roll over on him.  I didn't because I wasn't sure of his e state and didn't want him to pull up into me and gain top position.  Anyways I rolled into him late and blew any opportunity I would have had at a shot.  Scissors (right?) following that.  I tried to be aggressive and attack rather than pull my usual loop up when he would go down haha.   Missed a shot opportunity at 4:18ish.

At 4:27 I believe I started to gain position because I rolled a little behind him (somewhat on purpose) when I was coming down, which I believe allowed him to slip a little ahead of me, and then eventually allowed me to get position behind him as the loops continued (is that right or am I just stroking my ego there thinking I did something right haha).  I then rolled back into him coming off that last loop, dipped inside his turn, and pulled lead for the shot and got his whole tail.

Anyways is what I'm thinking through out this analysis correct?  What could I have done better?  Any points where I should have eased off the throttle?  Also, I am trying to incorporate rudder into my turns/rolls more.  I'm not sure if I even used it at all (I have a habit of not:cry ).

Any other overall suggestions or things you saw that I could work on?

Thanks,
donkey

Biggest thing I saw was you spend too much time looking out the front of your plane.  When you lost site of him he had crossed under your plane. Even then, had you been following him with you "head/eyes" you should have been in the left/rear view looking to re-acquire him.

In a duel, the enemy should always be in your view. If you need to be looking forward for anything your already screwed. Even in the MAs, looking forward is only for taking the shot. Keep the guy your fighting in view, and only look around for a quick SA sweep.

The other thing, is you had a few spots were you could have pushed the fight, but you were too passive, maybe worried about what the other guy was going to do. For me duels are for learning, not "chest thumping". Loosing isn't that big a deal. Push your plane, push yourself, and when you push too hard, remember where that spot is, and learn from it.

i agree way too much looking out the front you probably could have killed him after the opening moves if you hadn't lost him under you.

still way better than i ever do i need some practice lol

Wayne had a couple shots on the first merge. A better pilot would have made it count. To me you were lazy on the 1st merge and need to work on winning that battle.

Im no expert by any stretch but have to agree with FX-1. He "got inside of you" on the first merge as you were late proceeding into your opening move. He was already going verticle prior to you even beginning to make your move.

Other than that I think you did a good job of gaining and holding onto an advantage. I did see a couple of times where you probably could have pushed the fight to him harder but all in all I think you did well against your opponent.

Like most of the others mentioned, your initial merge was just a bit too lazy. IMO, you either go hard out for the angles (as Wayne did), or you opt for a lazy extension and force a 2nd merge where you have the E advantage (assuming your opponent did a max-g reversal) and play the E game. Doing anything in between will afford the better turner the angles and often a firing opportunity. You also allowed Wayne room off to one side on the merge to use against you. Cut him off - keep turning into him.

You seem to like to effectively 'win the high-ground' and then go from there. This is a valid tactic. But, in the process of doing this, you hang up on your prop to the point of stall, several times, and let your opponent under you where you can't see him. You're hanging up there with no airspeed and no means to maneuver, and no idea what your opponent is up to. You get away with it due to your E advantage and Wayne not taking advantage of it. But i would prefer to be more certain by keeping an eye on him all the time, and always keep enough speed up your sleeve to maneuver, especially when their nose is coming around on you.

Halfway through the engagement you transition from the keep the high-ground E tactics to a more aggressive angles fight, you slip into varying scissor fights. But on your transition, you are caught out diving too steep down onto your opponent (4:02 into your film) as he is coming up and over, this effectively throws away all your hard-won E gains and worse still you overshoot (about 4:10), and same thing again from 4:20. I guess i'm saying just be wary of diving too steeply down at your opponent if you have an E advantage. Its too easy to have the tables turned on you. Make sure you are attacking at a shallower angle (eg more from the rear) if you can. I think your  transition was not all that well executed and bit careless.

Good shot at the end tho :D

Keep posting the films :)
