You are assuming a lot if you think a measureable majority want to win the war.

There are three other arenas for you to try to win the war if that is what pleases you.  I don't understand why having a large map in the fourth arena would be so distressing.

I'm faily new to this game, and even brought in a coulple of my pals from other flight sims to try it out.   They all came to the same conclusion that I did when I first started.  What happens when you win?  Suffice to say, i couldn't really answer them.  "Well....ummm......the map resets.....yeah, thats it."  We all kind of just fly around, and as far as I can tell, so far, the object is get a bunch of us over a base, and then shoot them as they take off from the runway.  Serious gameplay flaw, but easily fixable if there were just some incentive to "win".  We didn't have a bad thing to say about the graphics, flight model, or fellow players.  They all tried it for a sub and moved on, with the main complaint being "theres no point in this game".  Great game, but damn, give it a sense of direction.   Oh, and on a funny note, there was also a, "The t.v. commercial didn't say anything about Rooks, Knights, or Bishops.  What the hell is this?"  lol.

the point isn't winning at all...

the point is realistic ww2 air combat. some of us purely play this for the enjoyment of a dogfight, winning is just an added bonus.

Hey, fellas, your preaching to the choir here.  I'm just saying that the guys that I flew with could easily be considered your "average" playerbase.  the current system might be alienating that very playerbase.  Personally, I love AH, and the way it is run.  Thats not to say it doesn't have flaws, but most of us aren't bothered by it.  The only gameplay issues I have are rather specific and are directly tied to what those very new guys were getting at.  That is, when we're capping a base, and someone takes out the fighter hangars in order to suppress the field.  Somone comes on comms and gives them a tongue lashing for destroying the fighter hangars.  THAT is a perfect example of the gameplay issues I'm hinting at.  Again, not that big of a deal for me, but to new players, that has to be absolutely vexing and terribly frustrating.  Eh, my 2 cents.

Yeah, it's not terribly deep, but the creators are furballers. If you're into the more historical gameplay, driven by objectives and what not, you're playing the wrong game, at least until CT comes out.

It doesn't matter what you do as a noob, it's going to be wrong. It's been that way since I started in 01. :)

To try to put some perspective on this, enjoyment of the game is different for everyone though there are at least two general schools of thought on this.

Almost all the players like the flying and air combat realism provided to one degree or another.  However, some are thoroughly emmersed in ACM and 1 v. 1 dueling to the exclusion of just about anything else.  Others are in the same camp, but also go for big fighter furball action and neither typ cares if anything is taken or lost, or any other actual game objectives.

In the other camp, these players enjoy the game beyond the ACM and furballing, and truly like organizing for base captures, assigning missions, working together with others as a group to achieve a tactical objective.  For them, this provides a small slice of combat realism through tactical, even strategic planning and operations, in addition to the aforementioned dueling/furballing.

If anything, the real 'winning' is about how enjoyable you make the game as you learn all facets of it, and how you improve your individual skills over time, even as it may be poorly measured by the game scoring system.

Beyond that, the only actual, tangible rewards for 'winning the map' is a handful of perk points and 'trashing rights' over the other two countries, for those that even bother to pay attention to such.

What is the incentive to win a game of chess?

You just start all over again.

Why bother trying to win a game of baseball?

What do you get for winning?

Isn't the game really about hitting and catching the ball?

Winning means different things to different people.

Some just like the sense of self satisfaction of winning.

Some just don't care.

Some just don't get it at all.

Different strokes-----

Well said Boner.  I think a lot of people expect all computer games to be the same.. winning unlocks a new level, or you get a new plane only you can fly, or an extra life, etc.  Its like getting good grades so the teacher can slap a sticker on your forehead.  Mastery of something, whatever that is, for one's satisfaction doesn't seem reward enough... everyone is looking for a trophy they can display (score hogs anyone?).  For me, knowing I can mix it up with the top pilots in the game is extremely rewarding.  I just cant yet   :furious
