they always make a big deal out of everything because... well...  not a big deal doesn't get listeners/watchers.

Always funny to get phone calls from friends of relatives who have heard about the great earthquake or flood or snowstorm or whatever in my area and wanting to know if I am OK..  It is never anything at all.

I guess they don't call it "drama classes" that these guys took for nothing.

I am just trying to figure out what "journalism" means and what they got taught in those classes.

Eagle?  You from the Falls?

Good lord, I don't feel so alone out here anymore.  My mom was one of those lucky people that wrecked,  Uck, such a mess.  She's fine, SUV... yeah... It's in the shop.

I used to live in a little town called Avery (I use 'live in' very loosely, seeing as how it was a 30 minute drive to town on back roads.)  Big ice storm back in... I wanna say 2000, maybe 2001.  Lost power for a week, maybe longer.  My dad decided about 5 days into it to go get a generator, fun times sitting in front of the fire place until then though.

Playing game boy, and cards/monopoly with my parents.  Fun... times...

I try not to make think poorly of the Texans too much when they panic over a few flakes of snow or a little bit of ice on the road.

They really don't have the facilities/supplies/experience to manage the roads for winter weather.  So the one time a year that roads are slick, they stay slick until nature takes care of it. That sucks for anyone driving on the roads during the slick time.

Oh well. Sometimes it works out good for the kids ~ if they get a snow/ice day. :)

Interestingly enough the roads here in Texas ice over much quicker than places north of here. It's quite odd.

Down here in Dallas when traveling West on I-20 there's a ramp to Loop 408. Anytime there's ice in the forecast they close that ramp because it's the first part of the highway to ice over.

My first attempt at driving in a Texas Ice storm wound up with me sitting sideways across 3 lanes of Mockingbird Rd. Completely unable to get traction. Three of us pushed the back end towards a patch of sand and I got to work.

The last few I've been in the midwest and fwiw, they act and drive like that all the time here so count your blessings while you watch the hilarity ensue.

It ain't here. Just drove to downtown Dallas and back. Wet but no ice.
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

Here's the email that the Michigan office received this morning (sent at 8:20am local Dallas time):

===
Most of the Dallas Java Team working from home today as there was a prediction of ICY weather today. If case you need to reach them, please send an email/IM if work number is not forwarded.
===

I thought the term 'prediction' was especially funny.

Meanwhile, here in beautiful West Michigan, the lake effect snow machine has given us 11 inches in the last day....and everyone's in the office :D

.10" of Ice in Hot Springs, AR

Most of my contacts & clients have gone home early...

The milk & bread has dissapeared from store shelves...

People out driving like IDIOTS on bridges & overpasses...

Dogs & cats living together...

MASS HYSTERIA!!!!

All over a little ice.  It's not like the Ice Storm of 2000, where it was 2.5" of ice, no power for 8 days, and a MAJOR catastrophe.  Maybe that's why folks are freeking out...we got burned bad before.

I'm sitting at my computer, drinking hot "Double Chocolate Ghirdelli" coffee, and another log on the fire...6 days supply of booze and I still have power.

Very true, they have only a hand full of plows & salt trucks.

I dont know many actual people who "panic" about. The local idiots on the news try squeeze all they can out these things. As usual they cry wolf and yet again nothing happens.

*WINTER WEATHER WARNING*

That might lead one to believe they will encounter frozen precipitation and hazardous driving conditions. Instead you wake up to nothing.
