Douglas Adams was a brilliant man
« on: January 28, 2008, 02:22:09 PM »
After a number of years, I'm re-reading the Hitchhiker series and find myself in awe of one of the most talented and insightful satirical humorists to have lived. I didn't understand alot of things the first time around, chief of which was the way he observed his own species with the detatched amusement of someone who actually "gets it".

Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in, fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it's still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.

If somebody thinks they're a hedgehog, presumably you just give 'em a mirror and a few pictures of hedgehogs and tell them to sort it out for themselves.

What did you all think of the recent movie? I remember seeing the BBC version years back and it was wildly disappointing...only caught bits of the new one and it had been years since I read the book.

Pretty, but rather disappointing as well.  When i get a chance I'll be rereading the books.

Ron stole Megan's heart away
and I got Sidney's leg

Also, his sentences were works of art.  He could do more with a sentence than most writers can do with a whole book.  For example:

The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.

Flying is simple. You just throw yourself at the ground and miss.
