Rogerdee, let me be the first to criticise or critique. :)

Go with a duo core intel chip, get 2 gigs of memory, Pc800, Don't go with the 8600 anything. Get a larger power supply.

Intel is recommend by about all. You will soon see in the following posts. AMD is good but takes a lot of work to get it going right. I spent weeks tweaking. I'm sure others will follow with some advice on the PS. The 8600gt is weak. I bought one and then turned around and bough an ATI 3870. One of my squadies bought one and returned it. It just is not a good card.

Anyway, good luck with the build.

1) my understanding is that the 8600 cards are a nono...
either get a 8800 of some flavor or dial back to a 7xxx of some sort.

2) 380W PS is not gonna cut it

3) The MB/chipset is pretty dated

4) 1G of memory is marginal.

For $700 you should be able to do better then that...

$80 Abit MB

$170 CPU

$160 VC

$30 Case
$45 Power supply

$50 2 Gig Memory

$65 250G sata drive

Meh... Not sure I'd trust Rosewill to make a PSU.  As for the Rosewill case, works better than putting everything in an anti-static bag...

Why dont you suggest some alternatives that fit his budget then.

I'd much prefer the OCZ PS and case I mentioned to toad...compare what I put down vs his specs above not your desire. He's got access to what toad, Trog and others have posted. He certainly can upgrade as his budget desire allows. That PS is better then the 380W generic. Rosewill PS's get decent reviews and are as good or better then certain "name" brands at this point. Would I put one in my system....not if I could afford more. If you'll note that power supply has 181 reviews on newegg alone and 137 are "5 star" (about in line with other sites). Rosewill makes alot of good "budget" stuff.
