Skuzzy I bought Vista when I found the Ultimate Upgrade version for a really good price during the closing of a Compusa. I did a clean/fresh install to a new hard drive and then updated itself (snicker) and everything went smoothly except for the sound card drivers. I have a SB Live and as you probably know its out of service life with no Vista drivers. I found a driver that allows the sound to work but in AHII the mic is MIA and probably the mic will never work.

I can pickup a X-fi Xtreme tonight on the way home if that will work. I read in your notes that your mic wasnt working either so I would like to know if this is a universal problem or if the X-fi should fix the problem? Please let me know what you think.

By the way without tweaks my Vista is delivering 46fps from the tower and 60 fps in flight. Im using the latest Nvidia drivers for the 7950s in Sli mode. I havent tested AHII with sli mode set to off but I am still on the AMD 64 X2 system so AHII is in compatibility mode. I know sli doesnt do anything but does having sli enabled cause a performance hit?

Im also planning on moving to an intel board but sticking to the sli side and going with 8800 GTs and 8Gigs of RAM at 1066Mhz. Good plan or not?

It is my configuration which is probably causing problems with my mic. I killed the Windows media stuff, which "peeks" at Microsoft occasionally, but it appears to also control the mic. In other words, "if you will not let us look at your system on occasion, then we will not let you use your mic".

There are a number of things in Vista which appear to have happened due to the pervasive attitude of, "they think they can shut this down, well I'll fix that!" from Microsoft.

Indeed there are services you cannot shut down in Vista at all. They come back like the runs after eating 3 day old fish.

Now, as to your hardware. 8GB of RAM is a waste of money as the 32bit version of Vista only addresses 3GB (rounded) of RAM like XP does. The 64 bit version of Vista is more unstable than a one legged man standing on a glass cube situated in the middle of a pig stye balancing a corn meal bucket on his head. It also has less support than the 64 bit version of XP.

No matter what you paid for Vista, you paid too much.

Hey Skuzzy it wouldnt have saved me anything but is there another version of windows that uses directx 10? Thats all this is about really. I mean I appreciated the fact that I didnt need to buy a dvd decoder also but its the directx 10 programs Im looking forward to (and I wish AHII used it and my physx card).

Only Vista uses DX10

Not sure if that is a question or not MotleyCH, but yes, DX10 is only available for Vista.

No I wasnt asking a question just stating why Vista was something I wanted. All I really wanted is DX10 for XP but MS says that will never happen. Oh and thanks Skuzzy. You will save me a couple hundred dollars at least with what you said.
