It is my configuration which is probably causing problems with my mic. I killed the Windows media stuff, which "peeks" at Microsoft occasionally, but it appears to also control the mic. In other words, "if you will not let us look at your system on occasion, then we will not let you use your mic".
There are a number of things in Vista which appear to have happened due to the pervasive attitude of, "they think they can shut this down, well I'll fix that!" from Microsoft.
Indeed there are services you cannot shut down in Vista at all. They come back like the runs after eating 3 day old fish.
Now, as to your hardware. 8GB of RAM is a waste of money as the 32bit version of Vista only addresses 3GB (rounded) of RAM like XP does. The 64 bit version of Vista is more unstable than a one legged man standing on a glass cube situated in the middle of a pig stye balancing a corn meal bucket on his head. It also has less support than the 64 bit version of XP.
No matter what you paid for Vista, you paid too much.
