Public Wireless Network Connection
« on: February 09, 2008, 09:36:37 PM »
I travel a lot and take a laptop with me.

Is it possible to play online using a wireless router from, say, a Holiday Inn?  In the past I have had internet access, but the arenas were unavailable.

So far I've not had any luck away from home.
But I can play all day long on this wireless laptop at home, if that's any clue.  Any ideas?

Typically the hotels public access is firewalled and probably prevents connections to anything other that the standard Internet access ports for WEB, email and so on.

You should be able to ask the hotel management about it to find out for sure.

Bosch,
I've travelled a LOT this summer. Some hotels have a good enough connection and some dont. Some have both wireless and wired connections and wired are always better. It just depends how many ppl are on the connection when you try to play
Ex: I can not play on weeknights when all the road warriors are in the hotel but can make it in on Fridays when they've all gone home. I suggest you check your ping rate at different times of the day or night and see which give you the most consistent readings.

Oh, dont talk to the desk about this as they will usually explain that you aren't allowed to play vidio games on the connection. Dont want to call attention to yourself as they will then blame any internet issues anyone has on you.

Good Luck

I've been using an unprotected wireless connection from the hotel across the street for months now. Some days are good, some days are bad. But it usually works just fine!:aok
