Back in the day it was not the least uncommon for the crews to signal each other. I can think of a couple cases where various crewmen on the bear used hand signals to ask an escorting F-14 to run the wings back.
The F-14 pilot (being a really nice guy and every bit as bored as the Bear crew) swept his wings and made sure everyone with a camera got some good pics. In the mean time the RIO was taking pictures of the the photographers. It also happened that this particular pilot also spoke Russian, so hand-written signs were held up on occasion also.
At the end of the day the sky was full of guys doing the same job for different companies. As long as we weren't told to shoot at each other we were all pretty friendly and no more competitive than, say, Navy vs Air Force.
...then again, there was the time the F-14 shot down the Air Force F-4. Ah well.
