Happens all the time...  Lots of Russian "fishing boats" with an odd excess of antennas hover around off the coastline in international waters anytime we run exercises, and nobody gets too excited.  We certainly don't sink them, although if they drove into port and offloaded someone who walked into a Boeing plant and then walked out with a bunch of classified data, it would be a different story.

A Russian Bear just buzzed one of our carriers this week...  Flew right over it at 2000'.  Flying a nuke capable bomber right over a national asset is just a BIT more provocative than a recon plane trolling up and down the coast, but we were adult enough to let it go without knocking it out of the sky in some sort of "accident".

Russian Bear's during the cold war was more symbolic and politics as is flying over carriers today. Compare that to the length and sophistication of the U2 and other programs.

Getting back to the topic, your always going to have some greedy individuals in a position to sell information that will. With little or no outside government influence what so ever. They'll take the information that's on offer for a price just as any government would.

Calling for economic sanctions is a bit over dramatic even if the US was in a position (economically) to do so.

If i was in the Russian Air Force, i would be embarassed about buzzing carriers, countries, whatever in bombers still powered by whirly bits on the wings.

Heck, why not intimidate the enemy further by shaking a spear out the window?

A TU-160 would be far more impressive... if they could get them off the ground.  I guess they could use one for a drive by if it was being towed.

I read somewhere that the turboprop allowed incredible range to these birds and basically removed the need for mid-air refueling in case of war.
