The program has stopped working
« on: February 15, 2008, 07:03:03 AM »
Aces High has stopped working.  I know what I did that caused it, I just don't know how to fix it.

I was toying around with the graphic settings on the clipboard.  There is a check box there that has something to do with graphics cards, but I don't remember precisely what it says.  I do remember that if you hold the mouse cursor over it, it says (something to the effect of) "This box should be checked unless it is incompatible with your graphics card."

It had always been unchecked on my laptop.  So I clicked the check box, and whammo, it's game over.  I can get the opening screens to come up, but as soon as I try to log on to an arena, it stops working.

I have uninstalled and reinstaled, and even re-downloaded the game.  Still no luck.  Just when I was really starting to understand the game..  :(

It's an HP (Compaq) laptop with Vista.

search for and delete the video8.cfg file. This is the video setting of your game. Deleting it forces the game to set a default one. Might get you through your troubles...... oh and you should remember this old adage......if it works, DON"T MESS WITH IT !!! :D

(agreeing with you)   I KNOW!!!

Stupid me...

Is the video8.cfg file in a hidden folder?  Using Vista, will the Search feature simply find it, or do I have to dig deeper?  Just looking for info on how best to locate this file.

I cannot find the file you're talking about.
Can you tell me where it is located?

I'm not very proficient with Vista.

Ok, I fixed it.

For future reference for those that will also have this problem...

I simply could not locate the video8.cfg file, and I searched and searched.  I spoke to Skuzzy on the phone about it just now, and he said it could be in a number of obscure locations.  At any rate, here's what fixed it:

Go to your desktop where the Aces High icon is located.  Right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator".  It treats it as a fresh install, and restores whatever needed to be restored.

Thanks to the A.H. 2 staff (Skuzzy) and Fugitive for your help.  :)
