This is where I got the top picture of Col. Howard Walter's squad.  He is second from the right in the front row with the bill of his cap flipped up.

I read through this article and it mentions VMF-224 and what they had been doing but mostly it talks about Maj. Galer because he was the only ace in the squad.  :)

Yeah, Col. Howard Walter was CO of VMJ-1 from '52 to early '53.  I saw somewhere that most of their flights were pretty uneventful but on occasion they would run into enemy Mig's .  I'm pretty sure they were unarmed so they would run like heck and hope the F-86's could bail them out.

According to his wife the Banshee was his favorite ride of all time.  It was his first jet and was fairly straight forward to operate. Unfortunately, he gave all of his flight logs to his cousin before he passed away, then his cousin passed away after him and the logs disappeared.
