DVI to HDMI, Worth It?
« on: February 24, 2008, 06:42:55 PM »
Is it worth the money to either get a Blu-ray disc player or 1080i or p upconvert DVD recorder when it has to be connected via HDMI on the player/recorder and DVI on the HDTV?

Studying lots of reports via Google again results in some new subtle what-ifs to contend with.  For example, if the DVI socket on my 4-year-old Sony HDTV isn't a certain type that allows the increased copy protection that motivates the entire HDMI infliction, then some Blu-ray disks may not play. I'll wait for inputs to this thread before further pursuing this DVI minutiae.

Although HDMI is a simpler more powerful connection, much of its impetus seems to be satisfying industry obsession for ever greater copy protection.

I'd appreciate any experience you might have with this DVI to HDMI  connection and whether you think it's worth messing with now or better to wait for eventual new TV and Blu-ray with HDMI to HDMI.

Brand recommendations also would be helpful.  So far the Sony BDP-S300 seems like the best choice.

I'll be getting a DVI to HDMI cable soon. I can get one through my employer wholesale for $15-$20. It's my understanding, though I could be wrong, that this is the highest quality/resolution conversion possible.
