Muslim medical workers in three major English cities are balking at hospital hygiene rules such as rolling up their sleeves when they scrub for surgery, according to The Daily Mail.

Health officials have been ready to wash their hands of the dispute, but at least one hospital is bending to the requests.

Female med students and staff at hospitals in at least a trio of large British cities — Liverpool, Leicester and Sheffield — have continued to flat-out refuse to comply with regulations aimed at fending off germs and infections, the Mail reported, with some saying they'd rather quit than expose their arms.

thats just ridiculous. If you read further in the story they have given in at other hospitals, including special changing areas.

If you think that is as rampant as this article would suggest, then don't have a Muslim doctor.

Imho (and I work with alot of foreign doctors) if a foreign doctor can conquer the language and culture barrier, they make great MDs because the drive to be the best is there. If they refuse to assimilate, then they can appear quite cold towards their patients and generally aren't that successful.

Let's face it, if you left the country of your birth to do what you loved best, why wouldn't the 'drive' be there?

edit: besides, in this country the Medical Director of the hospital would fire or remove the offending MD's privledges if they refuse to 'scrub'.

I've just asked my fiancee, who is a senior nurse in one of cities quoted in the article, if she has ever come across anything like this - she just laughed.

She works with Pakistani doctors all the time. She has never heard of anything like this.

You guys really, really, REALLY need to stop taking the Daily Mail as gospel. It's a sensationalist, reactionary, trashy tabloid with an anti-immigration agenda. It would rather us all be back in the 1930s working down coal mines or in steel factories with a glorious Empire to look after. It's a deeply pathetic publication.

I remember reading a story about Saudi Arabia needing to hire western doctors because Saudi doctors couldnt perform long operations due to the need to pray 5 times during their day.

Remember that story 2-3 years back about how a Woman got in trouble during her pregnancy because she refused to allow the nurses to work on her?  The nurses were black, and the media went ape****.




The reality of it was that she specifically saw these nurses NOT wash their hands, and refused to be treated by them until they did so.
