TE keeps crashing
« on: March 01, 2008, 08:01:59 PM »
I keep getting the "ahedit.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." error window (with the "Don't Send" button) whenever I try to do anything.

I'm running WinXP (sp 2). Got plenty of ram (2 gigs) and hard drive space. Any one have this happen to them before?

Thx

Robb

Yes and No.

It sounds like you started work on a terrain without saving it as the first thing you did, thereby not creating the files the TE expects to find when it's running. The TE will crash if you don't save as the second thing you do... New to name the terrain, then Save, then Exit.

If this sounds right to you, pull your project folder from the C:\Program Files\HTC\ah2editor\ahiiterr folder and start over. You may be able to salvage some of your work if you want, by restarting the TE, New, Save using the same name as before, Quit, and drag your original .elv, .typ and .oba files from the original folder to the new project folder replacing the new files the TE generated with the old files from when you saved your work in the original project. Of course, I don't really think you saved your work but maybe you did.

The first steps are the hardest.
Easy in-game again.

Well the thing is that I didn't even have the chance to start to do anything. I don't know anything about the TE so I was trying to figure out how things work. It's during that time that the TE will crash for some reason.

Is there a tutorial site or FAQ page for the TE?

Then you have nothing to loose so Start over.

Using Windows, remove the Terrain Editor (and other AH editors if you installed them).
Open C:\Program Files\HTC\ah2editor\ and delete the "ahiiterr" folder.
Reinstall the Terrain Editor.
Launch the TE.
Select New and enter a terrain name (8 char max).
Save the terrain, quit and re-launch the TE.

Now you can access the Help documentation for 90% of what you need for a H2H terrain, the rest is posted on the boards.
Easy in-game again.

Greetings,

Denholm (I think that's the spelling) has an excellent tutorial for the TE.  While it is not designed to show how to build an MA map, it will help you build the map and get started.

Look through the other threads, he posts in this forum frequently.

Easycor, it sounds like he was doing the classic of trying to start a project before making one. The TE will crash if you're not working in a saved project, thus us telling you, "Make a new terrain (File>New) then save it, close the TE, restart it, and make sure you have your new terrain loaded."

Afterwards the TE should work just fine.:aok

I was going thru a tutorial just now and when working with the CVs I accidentally deleted "cvtg0" from the "Shape groups" window. I don't know how to get it back :P

Re-installing the TE would be a fine choice. Won't erase any terrains and you won't have to work the dirty code.

I myself don't understand it after using the TE for two years.:p
