That is not at all true. Manson was not present at these murders. He gave orders to his followers to go out and kill, but said nothing about doing what was done to the pregnant Sharon Tate. He had never even seen her himself.
He was actually never convicted of murder himself. Instead, he was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. And under California law, he was subject to the same penalty as murder.
He was convicted of the murders under the joint-responsibility rule of conspiracy.
Tex Watson was busy killing both of the men
Back in the day there was quite a stir caused late, late one night when an
unnamed person and his band of hooligans rode into the small town of Farmersville Tx. (Tex`s home town) , parked on the town square and waited for the City Marshal, (glorified term at the time for night watchman in small towns) , to come around.
When he came around to see what was up, the unnamed person explained that he had been away in another state for quite a while and was seeking information on the current location his old buddy Tex.
Ever seen a City Marshal roll up his windows, lock his doors and speed off?
The sleepy little town and surrounding areas got livelier in the middle of the night than it had ever been.
Thank heavens for back roads.
