Here is a nice Tiger Muskie caught in the lake across the street from me.  The kids don't have the patience for Tiger Muskie fishing yet. Takes an average of 12 hours of fishing to land one.

I've only ever caught one Tiger, no real Muskies. Lots of Northerns over the years though.

My Great Grandfather cught one up in Canada decades ago that won a Field And Stream contest. I had the badge he got for it for years until my mom pawned it off. My Grandparents still have it mounted in their living room. Looks big enough that it could swallow the Northern my Grandfather caught and had mounted on the opposite wall.

I do still have his old tackle box and all his old lures still in their boxes. :aok

Why I fish for Northerns and Muskies- they are absolutely vicious, and you usually catch them by accident. I've even heard stories of guys landing them with the fish they originally caught in the belly of the beast, or of being about to land a fish and having it blasted from underneath by Jaws. For example-

My father has two tanks on the property; a one acre tank behind his house and a five acre one in the back.

All the bass and catfish caught in the one acre tank is either eaten or taken to the five acre tank.  This leaves mostly perch in the one acre tank.

My kids love to fish for perch (or crappie) with a cork and corn on a hook.

I prefer to get a plastic worm or spinning bait and work the shallows in the five acre tank.  To me fishing is an active sport, not a passive one.

I usually fish with spoons, spinners, or rapalas. Occasionally I'll throw out a minnow under a bobber, but I get bored easy- unless the beer is kept good and cold.

GWD is an avid crappie fisherman.  He's posted some pics of his catches and I must say, he knows where to find them.  :aok

Wabbit, the crappie were already staging pretty good here at Tawakoni before the cool spell. They have probably moved back out a bit since then.
It will be like that for a while I suppose. It seems like it is every year.
Warm/cool- In/out.

The shoreline here comes up to adjoin my backyard.
About an hour or so before dark, day before yesterday, I decided to check out the kitties.
In about 45 minutes I had 5 channels, with the smallest being around 3 1/2 lbs, the largest 4 1/2 to 5. Those filets gonna be might tastey  tonight. :)
While the water was down a couple of years ago, I desilted our cove and dug a 20 ft. wide channel, about 150 yds long leading up to my boat slip.
Should be some good crappie fishing when spawn hits.
Can`t wait

Yeah I like crappies. I got a funny crappie story. Im a big water salmon troller, among other things in the fishing world. So one year my partner and I went to Greers Ferry Lake down In Arkansas in April for spring walleye.

The walleye were off so we started drowning minnows for crappie and wipers, "striper/white bass mix". I was lost cause I almost never use live bait in fresh water and for 2 days we didnt catch anything.

So on the 3rd day I told my buddies were doing it my way. I broke out my trolling gear, dipsey divers, slide divers, downriggers, planers boards, long lead lines, I had 12 rods hanging off that 22 foot deep V rig of mine. I started running small fat shad plugs right over the brush at the first break offshore, "thats first dropoff for you non sportsmen". Luckily I had my light trolling rigs with me, the kind I use for spring coho and walleye.

Dudes we started hitting honest 3lb crappies and bigger. They were so big they didn't even look like crappie. These crappie were coming off those bushes and cover and attacking those plugs like they were muskie. I dont know how many we caught in 4 days but there was no limit back then and we caught a ton. We also caught wipers and smallies that we threw back. Boy I remember the looks those southern bass fisherman gave us when we rounded the bend with all those rigs hanging off the boat. Like we were from the moon.

After the 4th day a cold front hit and that was it. About 1/2 dozen of those crappie I should have had mounted but when your young you think your always going to catch bigger and better. I never hit the crappie quite so good again.

And muskie? I love fishing muskie. A muskie stick is a different breed. We'll spend weeks pounding water to catch one big fish and then just throw it back in the water.

Twelve foot jon-boat, two foot sculling paddle, Ambassadeur 5000 loaded with 15 to 20 lb test line, five foot bass rod of medium stiffness at the tip, Lucky 13, Creek Chub, and if worse comes to worse, a spinner bait .

Cap, sunglasses, ice-chest with drinks, vienna sausages and crackers, afloat on a cypress covered lake or swamp.

Or, if I'm wanting to see fish strikes that'll have me going weak in the knees, I'll try doodle-sockin'.

Did you go out on a Long Island tuna boat?

I used to go out on the Viking Starship for blues. Closest I ever came to catching so many fish I wanted the action to stop. The big, night time blues.
