Its either a mislabled caption, or a plane that had them retrofitted in the field, because the D-11 left the factory without wing pylons.  I don't know if they could retrofit the wing pylons on the older models or not.  There was a lot of plumbing and some structure added to support those.  Its probably just a typo on the caption.  By the time Saipan rolled around, most of the squadrons were using D-22/23's.

Just have to check the tail number... 275308 (42-75308). It's a P-47D-11 of the 73rd FS. This squadron had a mix of P-47s of various blocks. Almost every P-47D (prior to the D-15) shipped to the Pacific was retrofitted with the wing pylon kits. I have photos of D-2-REs with the retrofit. Lockheed did many of the conversions.

Here's another 73rd Jug. This one is a P-47D-10-RA.

My regards,

Unless HTC changes its long-standing policy, wing pylons would not be added.

Best thing to hope for is a P-47D-23 to be added the next time the Jugs are updated.  Don't hold your breath though, because it will be a while.

:O  My God, Widewing!  That' P-47 is a wanabe Navy plane, taking off that carrier so!
 :aok

Most wing hard points were field modifications on nearly all our first run combat planes.  F4U's, P-38's, Ponies and so on were upgraded in field by some pretty ingenious ground crews during the war.

Pacific Thunderbolts of all models were retrofitted with wet pylons before they shipped out due to the long ranges involved down there.

Instead of being shipped over covered and ready for assembly like the ETO, the PTO had all planes on carriers, and launched them when close to the base of ops.

In fact, a carrier with a load of F8F Bearcats was on it's way to Iwo (I think) when the war ended.

If you want wing pylons on a Razorback, I say we drop a formal request for the P-47D-23.

Paddle blades, able to go to deep into Germany, bomb and rocket capable- it's the Super Razorback.

Faster climbing, faster accelerating, faster top speed....yes please  :aok
