can someone tell me how to salute, I get saluted but don't know how to salute back, guy probably thinks i'm an ass.

You have to use the following dot-command:

.s playername


type it into the radio buffer.

And, you can also open the clipboard <Esc>, then type ".help" into the text buffer to get a list of "Dot" Commands.
