I can build this rig suggested from pc gamer for about a grand.

Case- Coolermaster CM690
PSU-CorsairHX520
Mobo-Abit IP35-E
Cpu-Core2 Duo E6750
Ram-Corsair xms2 2x1gb=2gb dual channel kit
VC-evga 512 p3 n801 ar geforce 8800gt
Hdd-Seagate barracuda 7200.10 320gb sata
Optical drive-Sony optiarc 20x dvd+-R burner sata
Soundcard-Creative sb x-fi xtreme gamer

It will be a dedicated gamer probably just AH and FS

Am I on the right track?

Any suggestions or comments appreciated

Looks good to me and I was looking real hard for fault. Guess we will have to wait for the hard core guys to take a peek.

My only thought is why not the e8400. Still though that is only a slight gain in (.34 gig) speed from what you chose and it cost maybe $30 more.

I'm not a big Sony fan. They make very cheap products. I worked for Circuit City and the manager had this to say about Sony's DVD players. Yeah, I know there's going to be a lot of returns but sell them anyway. Real eye opener.

If you're building a dedicated gaming rig, get a WD Raptor hard drive. Excellent performance, but you pay the penalty in capacity. I use a 72g raptor on my gaming pc, in 2 partitions. 1 partition for windows, 1 partition for installed games, and a seperate, much larger hd for mp3s, movies, etc.

My load times are half that of people with faster pc's but slower HD's. I didn't expect that much of an improvement, but I was impressed the day I started using it, and it's been 100% reliable for over 3 years now.

I saw one of those on Newegg and it said 36gig. I thought that was a mistype and they meant 360 gig. Guess I was wrong.

I have the 150 G Raptor runs about 170$. Good performance increase over 7200 rpm drives. Plenty of room for AH/FS dedicated computer. You can always add a 7200 rpm drive as a second drive later. They are cheap and have plenty of capacity.

What a lot of people do is buy the 72Gb Raptor version, load their Games/Software/OS on that drive, and have a second 7200RPM 250gb+ drive for storage of files/music/etc.

Raptors are nice and fast, you could do a RAID 0 setup with 7200RPM drives which would speed it up a bit, but not qutie as fast as 1 Raptor.  Plus you double your hard drive failure rate since you have 2 HD's acting as 1 and if just 1 goes back, the raid array fails an you wouldn't be able to boot up.

Starting to collect parts for this thing and second guessing myself.

Still thinking of going with the e6750. over 100 less than e8400.

Is my choice of motherboard and video card wise? I want to go with nvidia but do I need this much of a card?

edit, double checked and can get the 8400 for about 50 bucks more.

Also thinking of going with GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L mobo about same price as ABIT but more user friendly I hear.

Yep, that would be the first generation of WD Raptor drives and the 75 was next and now the 150.  I have a 150 and it is indeed lightning fast!  It doesn't matter which flavor you buy, they are all 10,000 RPM drives with a nice cache and will beat anything else in speed.

ok, looks like the e 8400 is pretty much unavailable for a decent price, really don't think I need the quad, so I think I'm back to the e6750. Still not sure on the mobo either abit or gigabyte.
All opinions welcome.

Bang for the buck is owned by the dual-core CPU's.  The quad core CPU's are really for niche applications or servers.  99.9% of the people using computers cannot chew gum and walk at the same time.

And while the Raptr drives are pretty fast, they also seem to have a short life span as compared to others in the market.  Of course, your mileage will certainly vary.

If a game doesn't like 10k drive then there's something else wrong somewhere. The drive speed should not matter.

One worthy note about Raptors is that they're much noisyer than 7500rpm drives.

 one I found that didn't like it was Fighter Ace. 7200 only. But always a possiblity I didn't have something set right.
