At the monent I start up a computer and fly a WW2 combat simulation. I have to open a window and load a file which allows me to participate with fellow enthusiasts in this simulated re-creation of one of the last centuries major conflicts.

If I had to push a button on a game console,it would become a game. I don't care if nothing changed, it would be a game.

Aces High on a game console is like a Prius with a gun rack - it can be done but should it?

That's old and no longer valid.  When the slim PS3 came out, there was a firmware update that disabled the use of 3rd party operating systems.  If you were one of the unfortunate that had Linux and updated to that particular firmware, well you were SOL afterwards.

The PS3 has a limited hardware setup. All consoles are limited compared to the average gaming machine. They "look so smooth" because they cut down maps, resources, omit parts of the game that simply don't run, reduce the texture size...

In short, they have to custom tailor the game directly to the hardware because it has to fit on the limited platform.

All PC games that have console ports have to do this. The PC version is always the best. That is NOT counting console games ported to PCs. They may have more hardware options but it's too late -- the entire game development, design, and layout, was already handicapped from the beginning.

I"m bummed this is a necroed thread because I think its a good discussion, that just happened to die out 2 years ago.

The PS3 supports USB, so there need not be a controller issue... even if the game only supported one brand of sticks/throttles/pedals, that would be enough.  And AH runs on pretty low end hardware, so it should be doable when you know every PS3 is the same and can code right to its specs.

The problem is that the code isn't the same, at least with the 360 there might be a lot of similarities with a PC, but I don't think that's the case with the PS3.  So you'd have to spend twice as much time developing each patch, assuming you decide to deliver updates to the PS3 version of the game (Everquest 1 for macs has been on the same patch level for 6 years or something like that, and never got the expansions past PoP, so this is not a given or a necessity for that matter).

The upside is that you have a chance to significantly increase the subscriber-base which means more money to HiTech.  And also to joystick manufacturers that work with the game... you may say the increase in sales would be negligible, but I'd argue that both AH and joysticks are already niche markets, so even a small increase in subscribers (or bought joysticks) might be significant, hugely significant if the game catches on... just look at Guitar Hero.

But for whatever reason HTC has never decided to do much more than the occasional TV add on the History or Military channels in the way of advertising or pushing to expand the player base.  Its a legit way to go if you want to maintain control of your own company, as expansion often (but not always) means selling shares and giving up some control.  Oh and Skuzzy might have to be cloned if the PS3 users find the forums... after a point the community almost always gets worse the more anonymous people join it.

when i had my "supercharged" 500gb ps3, i was actually able to download "aceshigh". it would show up in the game sections in its own private folder, it would have the AH logo, but whenever i would try to launch it, my ps3 would freeze.

it would be great to bring this to the console gaming market. IL2 has made the leap. aceshigh could aswell.

a big +1 to this.

just HTC, do us a favor, if you EVER decide to do this in the future, make it a playstation exclusive. no reason to waste your time with failbox  :noid

On the issue with the DVI input on older model HD sets, you can purchase from bestbuy an hdmi to dvi adapter that allows you to convert the hdmi signal to DVI. I have a similiar setup, older tv rca  scenium with ps3 with hdmi ports only. the unit is small and snaps into place on the dvi, cost is around 22 us dollars.

The IL2 console games have such laughable physics as to be purely arcade shootemups. There's little if any computing the performance of the plane, the bullets, the damage, etc. It's all visual eye candy with no substance.

This is the price you pay for putting something on a console. People have been saying PC gaming is dying because consoles are killing it, but this is just false wishful thinking put out by console users. PC gaming will continue forever because frankly you can't get decent games on consoles. 104 key keyboard + optical mouse + good speakers + high resolution monitor + countless USB devices with wide ranges of inputs and axes far far outstrips a 2-joystick console controller.

Then there are the millions of anti-social people that would be kicked off any team in real life, the little 7 year olds that cuss over the speakers like daddy must (where else do they get it?) and the instant-gratification-or-else-this-game-sucks types of gamers that are rampant on consoles (not to mention the folks that want instant gratification so bad they have horribly hacked recent games like MW2 and BC2 -- on CONSOLES no less!)....

So, 100,000 "NO"s to putting Aces High on a console. HTC doesn't need that kind of clientelle. When they're serious enough to get a PC and learn how to use it (it's NOT that hard) they will appreciate all they can do with it and will be welcome. Until they mature past the console gaming level, who wants them????
