Black Tulip 109

 Although I've seen many many artisit renditions and skins of Erik Hartmann's famous ride i have yet to see an ACTUAL picture of it. Are there any out there?

I don't know if the photo is accurate, or just an artists rendition, but there is a picture of it on the cover of The Blond Knight of Germany.

His 109 wasn't painted like that for long, since the Soviets soon figured out that there was a deadly pilot in the seat and learned to avoid it like the plague.

Also, between pages 144 and 145 are 4 unnumbered pages of photos. One of which is Hartmann standing next to the nose of his 109 and you can clearly see part of the tulip pattern. (It's a closeup more of Hartmann than the plane) It doesn't show the entire plane however.

I can confirm this  :aok

I 'had' a picture of it, I think. I don't remember a pic of his Black Tulip 109 being there, but I had a library book with hundreds of pictures from throughout his life. I remember seeing that, once he got out of Soviet activity and rejoined the postwar Luftwaffe, the Geschwader he headed was all painted with black tulips. They were the most badass looking F-86's Ive ever seen.

Too bad I had to return the book  :cry

Actually.....Guppy or Widewing might have the answer to this. Heck, one (or both) of them might actually have a picture of Hartmann's 109 with the tulip pattern.

after the soviet fighters stopped going against his plane, rookie luftwaffe pilots painted their 109 the same way, so they wouldnt be attacked
