...just came across in the logs that while the Allies did not sink the CV of TF76 they did put 3 x 1000 lb bombs on her...

I had the honor to serve as the skipper of IJN CV76 during Frame One, and the grand old ship did indeed shrug off those hits.  Damage was minor: the 40mm flak on the aft end of the island was knocked out, as well as the single 5" gun near the stern. Our Damage Control teams were able to keep those hits from starting any fires, the radar continued to function, and Engineering was able to maintain full power.  The defensive CAP, the 11th Kokutai (JG11), valiantly sacrificed themselves - to a man! - defeating the low-level attacks of the Mitchell bombers.

Umm... someone killed twelve of his fellow A6M2s on the deck of CV76 in the first minute or so of Frame One... must've fired his guns or something... sure wish that I'd recorded the conversation on squad channel right after *that* happened!   :rofl

What're the score implications of such a... erm... mishap?

Normally friendly fire / ditches etc in the first moments after roll are not counted in scoring a frame.  This is due to large frame rate hits when 30 to 60 planes take off from the same base or in your case a person "accidentally" kills his squad with cannon fire and/or rockets.

None. Basically as stated within the first 15 minutes death by friendly fire or crashes or ditches don't count. However, I still go over the logs and double check those just in case the deaths were not the result of enemy action. I know in this FSO there is no way opposing forces can engage in 15 minutes but in the past there were FSO where it was possible. So we always try to double check and make sure it is more a case of .. something let loose with their cannon, they dropped bombs on take off and killed people, or they tried to take off a carrier heavily loaded (I have a heck of time doing it myself in an F4U) and ditched in the sea.

After 15 minutes all deaths count.

JV44 also helped defend this CV and I was amazed how she pulled through after having only one or twe defenders left over.  :aok

Was it a bombs attack or was this damage done strafing with the 8x 50cal nose guns?

I'm wondering if all the 50cal hits added up some sort of false damage or not?  :noid

The ship did take 3 x 1000 lbs bombs according to the logs. The points were based on that.

The B25C Mitchels were the glass no variants (Allied CiC put all B25C in the glass nose so 4 .50 cals at most I believe).
