The Russian prototype with the mid engine was the Goudkov Gu-1 and I completely forgoted the Saab J21 which actually made to the production being mid engined with pusher prop. Even the Japanese had a mid wing prototype, the Yokosuka R2Y.

the p-39 got screwed by the recomendation panel it would have been great except that they had them remove the supercharger because they didt see anybombers reaching us so it would all be ground attack
there was another mid engined plane the super cobra

The GE turbosupercharger was removed. It still had the mechanical supercharger.
