On a related note, it seems that the survival of the world hinges at least indirectly on the financial ruin of wealthy Arabs.

This one might actually come within reach with a price tag of $30k and around 300mpg with their hybrid version. They say they have plans to sell these in California within the next year or so.
Hope this is not all just vapor....

A contest like this might actually get things moving in the right direction. Never underestimate the power of greed/desire.

It certainly can't hurt. Greed is a very powerful motivator as well.
