Story of P-38 pilot who never gave up
« on: March 23, 2008, 04:50:35 PM »
Amazing tale...photo recon pilot shot down in 43 over New Guinea, lived hidden from patrols for 8 months before coast watcher arranged sub pick up.

After war, never forgot, and felt he had a debt to repay...and never gave up repaying it. Responsible for building schools and more for those who helped him. Last visit was at age 90, when villagers carried him by chair to see the wreck of his rediscovered Lightning.

Well worth the read.

He was lucky that the Japs didn't catch him and use him for breakfast... :O
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
