Another Laptop Question
« on: March 24, 2008, 11:11:42 AM »
My desktop is about to croak, framerates lately 8-17 in the ma's and when people talk or explosions or smoke, rates can drop to 5-7.  My present puter is 6 years old and vid card is ge force mx440 64meg.

So am strongly thinking of a laptop not to replace the desktop but to supplement it.  We travel more so was thinking laptop.  I have a budget of 1-2k and I will game on the laptop prolly most of the time.  I had visions of building a new desktop this coming winter.

I would like a blu-ray player or burner, built in hdtv tuner, and probably a 17" display, and want dvi or hdmi output also so  I can hook up laptop to my projector.  Not sure if I want vista or xp pro, although seems vista runs slower but supports dx10 whereas xp wont for future stuff.

Another thing is, how do you hook up joysticks and stuff if there are no gameports or such.  Im such a laptop noob.

edit* forgot to ask you guys for recommendations.  Thanks

Check out cyberpowerpc.com as well.  Some real nice laptops there.  Hell they even have a laptop with a 8800GTX in it.

Bought my laptop from them, cost roughly $800.  Has Vista, AMD dual core, Nvidia 7600 card, and it plays AH great on high res and full graphic detail.

Most laptops have multiple USB ports for joysticks etc. I would look to some of the specialty computer sites for good gaming laptops. My gateway it has a 17 inch screen and Vista and I occasionally play AH on it. But its far from ideal. I'm on the road 40 weeks a year. So IMO, for travel buy the lightest laptop you can find. Then build a cheap desktop for playing AH. $500-700 should be enough for a good AH desktop.

I have absolutely no problems with it.  I would definitely order from them considering the quality Im getting and the cost.

The only complaint is that it does take a little longer to receive it than a company such as Dell or Gateway but for what Im paying I will take it.  It took me about a month-month and a half before I got mine in the mail.

Take a look at the Toshiba laptops too.  I used to have one that I loved (Satellite Pro) and my brother just bought one with a 17" monitor (very nice).  Now I have a POS Sony Vaio (stay away from them).
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

:aok  I took your's and others advice on weight and stuff and ended up buying a ASUS M50SV-A1 laptop with a 200gig 7200rpm drive and going to build a 5-800 dollar replacement desk unit this fall/winter.  I bought it from xoticpc.com. Now I cant wait to get the darn thing  :pray

Wait a minute, you have to run Aces High II in "Windows 98/ME" compatibility mode in that configuration.  AMD dual core is not the way to go if you can avoid it.  There are rumors that AMD might have a fix for its Phenom CPU's in June for this bug (yes, it is still prevalent in the Phenom), and it will be via a micro-code update, but all other AMD dual core CPU's are stuck with this bug.
