The South Park episode was a spin off from the 1981 movie Heavy Metal.  This movie is a cult classic and was innovative for the times.  Here is a link to the B-17 portion of the movie.  It contains violence and may give you nightmares.

The green glowing orb following the B-17 features prominently throughout the movie.  It is always present in each different episode and seems to reveal and magnify the character of anyone who handles it.  In almost all cases, it causes men to do evil either through killing or greed.  There are a couple of cases where the finder accomplished good.

It started out in the movie as an artifact discovered on another planet during an archaeological dig.  As the movie progresses, the green orb turns up in situation after situation, transcending time and space.  Because it is such a dangerous object, there is a special breed of women warriors whose job it is to locate the orb and ultimately contain or destroy it so it can do no more harm.  Only one woman warrior is enacted with this duty during her lifetime, so part of the plot of the movie is the search for a successor to carry on the task.

The animation is good but what makes this movie a classic is the soundtrack.

   1. "Heavy Metal" (Sammy Hagar) (3:50)
   2. "Heartbeat" (Riggs) (4:20)
   3. "Working in the Coal Mine" (Devo) (2:48)
   4. "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" (Blue Öyster Cult) (4:48)
   5. "Reach Out" (Cheap Trick) (3:35)
   6. "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)" (Don Felder) (5:00)
   7. "True Companion" (Donald studmuffinen) (5:02)
   8. "Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment)" (Nazareth) (3:24)
   9. "Radar Rider" (Riggs) (2:40)
  10. "Open Arms" (Journey) (3:20)
  11. "Queen Bee" (Grand Funk Railroad) (3:11)
  12. "I Must Be Dreamin'" (Cheap Trick) (5:37)
  13. "The Mob Rules" (Black Sabbath) (2:43)
  14. "All of You" (Don Felder) (4:18)
  15. "Prefabricated" (Trust) (2:59)
  16. "Blue Lamp" (Stevie Nicks) (3:48)

I remember this movie now. They used to show it with Rocky Horror Picture Show, in the cinema on Sat. nights.  :rock

Was the movie an offshoot of the underground comics?

Stripperella had a great episode featuring a B-29 raid on an island fortress. Stan Lee is greatness.

"The green glowing orb following the B-17 features prominently throughout the movie."

The orb was called the Loc Nar.

Sorry but I had to.

I still keep my H.M. subscription. Got my squad name from an old issue. That South Park episode had me chuckling all through it.
