Was closer to 165mph, still fast though.

Testament to the the CoT, the safer barriers and the conditioning of the driver.

Moment of impact ticker was at 185. If that can be believed.

Saw an Angel from British Columbia hit the wall on a nitro Harley dragster in Louisiana. He not only walked away, he ran again the next morning. :)

you can't drive a NASCAR car on the street because it does not meet federal safety requirements.

anyone else see the irony here?

WOW!

Talk about making a wreck and impact survivable. That was simply unbelievable when you watch that. The way the wall absorbs energy now and the way the car and restraints work together in that is amazing.

Still rather weak compared to a INDY/CART style crash. NASCAR is only catching up with the technology in those cars. Glad he is safe and I bet he is going to be sore for a month.

The lack of headlights, taillights, and turnsignals' is primarily one reason. But otherwise, IMHO they well exceed Front/side impact standards. By a large margin.

That aside, I noticed that is the CoT (Car of Tomorrow) that almost everyone loathes.

Saw that yesterday evening, and was *shocked* that he walked away from that one.
My youngest spent the rest of the night watching crash clips on youtube.

RPM is spending the weekend up there at the Texas Motor Speedway, so once he gets back, I'm sure that he'll post something on his own blogspot plus here.

Yep if that was an open wheel car, that would have been a crippling wreck, and the driver would not have walked away for sure. NASCAR has always emphisized safety, and that is what really brought on the new cars (CoT), this type of wreck killed the likes of Dale Earnhardt and Adam Petty, McDowell is lucky and he can thank the designers of the saferbarrier, the HANS device, and the CoT.
