Screen grey-outs/lock-up
« on: April 11, 2008, 11:37:58 AM »
I've got a minor issue since my new build.  Three times in the past two weeks while playing, my screen will suddenly go all grey on me.  I can still hear my engine running but can't exit without turning power off at the power switch and re-booting (causing a disco).

I'm pretty positive it's not temperature related as, as soon as I re-boot I check temps and they are all fine.  I'm not running any custom sound packs or skins.  I do have anti-aliasing maxed in the NVidea control panal and am using 1024 textures with all graphic settings turned on high.

It seems to play normally for hours, then suddenly... grey screen.  I got one last night after about 3 hours of play.

I was thinking it might be one of those annoying system security messages popping up in the background that's causing it (I have windows auto-updates turned off and occasionally get the "you are unprotected" pop-up) so last night I turned off the security warnings at the control panal but haven't had a chance to see if thats whats causing this yet.

My system specs are well documented elsewhere in this forum.

Any other ideas?
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Antialiasing + large textures will eat your memory real bad. It's possible that you get a memory related lockup after a while.

I would try either reducing texture size or (preferably) reducing antialiasing to half what you have now or totally off in order to see if it makes a difference.
