Book: Fat Kid's War
« on: April 05, 2008, 02:32:17 AM »
Title: Fat Kid's War, published by F.K. Milton .. written by one of us.

I finished reading it today.

Brought back a ton of memories I had forgotten ..like the smell that hit you when you stepped off the Herk in-country for the very first time.
(I never was in Vietnam ..but ..Thailand was same-same numba-TEN that first day!)

Those of you who were there, or worked the line anywhere in the area, or if you weren't and want to know just how screwed up some days were, you gotta read it.

I started readin it and next thing I know the sun was comin up, day and a half straight thru.
Plan a weekend around it ..it's that good.

It's a better read than 'Fighter Pilot' by Harold Robbins.. IMHO.
(and if you havent read that.. yer education is highly lackin :)

Well, I havent read it. Even though I'm 15, I read alot of stuff. Have you ever read that book Once an Eagle by Anton Myrer? Thats a great book OMHO.
And of course there is a couple others I really like. Flyboys, Flags of our Fathers, The Great War (Anton Myrer). Read any of those? (You probably read Flags of our Fathers)

Once an Eagle is an excellent read.

I dont remember the others you listed .. possible I have read them long ago.
I've read every book I could find about WW2 fighter pilots ..only a few about the other parts played.

Hell on Wheels is an in depth look at just what Patton-US Army was all about when they put together a tank division.
HMS Ulysses is an excellent read about a heavy cruiser on the North Atlantic runs.
Brazen Chariots .. awesome read dealin with the brits and their Stuarts in North Africa against the Afrika Corps.
The Final Battle .. fall of Berlin from the German side.

Others over the years.. I cant remember nearly all of 'em :)

Flyboys is about American pilots that got shot down, and either escaped or got tourtured and murdured as prisoner on the island of Chi Chi Jima. and other things associated with avation. I dont remember it too much though. But it also tells about how the first George Bush got shot down and how he got back.
I'm pretty sure you've read Flags of our Fathers, if not, it is about the 2nd set of flag raisers on Iwo Jima that got famous even thouh only 3 survived from the 2nd one.

Agreed on Once an Eagle.  Read that a long long time ago.  I very much liked Flag of our Fathers.  Didn't like Flyboys much.

I think it was because Bradley's heart seemed in the work in FoF and it seemed like work for Flyboys.

Guppy, I found both books a good read but FoF was very hard on me at times.  Flyboys was very informative, esp. the first 150 or so pages.
