mensa.. never heard of it but I don't care.   Films it all himself eh?   that seems a little difficult.   Not only is he a survivor but he is his own cameraman.   I bet that there is a whole crew of people not far off.  I bet he couldn't starve to death or get lost for good.   He might have an accident but if he lives for a few hours he will live.   help is probly really within shouting distance.

Must be some crap footage too.. with him being his own cameraman.  in any case.. it is a manufactured scenario.. he is not lost or surviving.. he put himself in a situation that he can get help out of at any time.

lazs

He actually does a pretty good job of filming himself.  He has 60 lbs of camera gear he has to haul around wherever he goes and sometimes has to make two trips across rugged terrain to be able to keep filming.

He does have a crew that can pull him out but they are nowhere near within shouting distance and they could not get to him quickly in an emergency.  Usually the show isn’t that exciting and he basically just starves for a week but one episode that made my hair stand on end is when he was actively stalked by a jaguar in the Amazon jungle.  He tried to scare it away but it wouldn’t scare.  He then made his way to a native village in the middle of the night, because his crew would likely never find him in the jungle, and was stalked the entire way.  When he got there everyone made for their little grass huts and they could hear the jaguar pacing around the village growling.

Most of the reality shows are crap, but I was actually surprised at how authentic Survivorman is.
Do not attribute to malice what can be easily explained by incompetence, fear, ignorance or stupidity, because there are millions more garden variety idiots walking around in the world than there are blackhearted Machiavellis.

I have the same thoughts, ChickenHawk.  Most of the episodes certainly aren't hair raising, just, like you said, him starving for a week and trying to maintain energy.  But that is enough to interest me, the crazy scenarios in Man vs Wild throw me off, and it doesn't help that he is in obvious places of safety (see the lava tunnels on youtube).  I like survivorman's realistic depiction of what you would go through and how to handle yourself.  It, of course, has to make money.  But I think they are managing to do that with "real" alone, instead of hyped up fake things.

If you understand what I mean.

Never heard of the show or those people. I disabled E channel so it is not in my channel lineup as it looked like a trash mag type channel.

Agree completely. I was watching with my wife the other day and we both wondered if he ever actually caught anything substantial to eat? I've seen him try to fish in tidal pools and hunt for grouse or build a deadfall, but he never seems to catch anything... other than those scorpions.

how the hell do you starve to death in a week?   They got to know exactly where the guy is I bet.   If he stays still..  injured.. for more than a day.. someone will come.  if the gps says no movement.

It is not like the catch thing (which I also don't give a rats about) because it is a manufactured situation with a safe and predictable outcome.  he is in no more danger than any other wilderness hiker and certainly less than any mountain climber or commercial fisherman.

The last episode of Survivorman I saw he was in Alaska and he ended up eating the local grasses and weeds until he happened upon the carcass of a fish that looked like it'd been dead for two weeks. Then he feasted. After that he was examining piles of fresh bear poop- I figured he was looking for desert so I changed the channel.

He snared a rabbit while surviving a simulated plane crash in Canada (I think it was Canada anyways...). There was another one... shipwrecked on an island. By the 3rd day, he was having an island bbq and pretty happy... he was debating coming back to that spot for a personal vacation. I've also seen him doing some improvised spear fishing on other episodes. Good stuff.

and Lazs... there's shows for both of those. Everest: To the Limit and of course Deadliest Catch.

Normal people flirting with death tends to be much more enthralling than a bunch of drama potatos competing for a cash prize.

edit: I dunno how the term for a permiscious person that accepts money for sex turns into potatos... but whatever.

mega.. heres a hint for you.. as soon as it is a reality show..   it aint real anymore.   think about it.. if it was that tough.. the cameramen couldn't be there.

lazs

Then what about all of the dozens of hunting programs on the various outdoor and sports channels??

Does it make a bit of difference to the Deer or Elk that gets shot if they were on TV??

lazs, He does not necessarily starve to death, but it is uncomfortable not eating for a week.  More so in the fact that he moves around alot , never staying in the same place more than a day or two it seems.  Also a lack of water contributes to his difficulties.  He has to get it all himself, while staying alive in some very harsh places.  It's interesting.

I have not eaten for a week before.. I don't need to see anyone else do it.. I have been extremely uncomfortable and been severly injured in my life.. I don't need to watch it.

I don't watch hunting shows either.   or fishing or golf..  pretty much.. I don't watch any TV except to rent movies and maybe the military channel or disney with the grand daughter or cooking shows with the girlfriend.. well.. I don't really watch but.. they are on when I walk by.

I just can think of at least 100 things better to do with my time.

But of all the shows on TV.. the reality shows baffle me the most as to why people watch.   The situations don't seem like any reality I have ever seen.   Barring, possibly, the catch thing which I have not seen but.. who cares?  I hate the frigging ocean.
