GENERALLY, AT THESE SHOWS, you'll see uniformed teens directing you...these are Civil Air Patrol Cadets.......they work very hard at these shows to help the public enjoy them. if you see them, why not thank them for their help and service, as they're usually giving up their weekend for us.
myself and somewhere between 400-600 CAP personel will be working at the air show at McGuire AFB in May.

I used to be in CAP as a youngin....
I was 207 outta the Tobyhanna army depo in PA.
They said "learn to fly" yeah righ.....
Hawk Mtn. Encampment East at Willow Groves and not to mention the hours of tedious boring studies/lectures oh yeah and paying dues....
Hmmm. we never even LOOKED at one of the supposed planes we were to learn on.
That and the AF Col. that was one of the officers there his daughter was the highest ranking cadet not to mention the favorite for EVERYTHING!
Bah, humbug.....
Got certified as a ranger 2nd class (never even went on one search and rescue) and had various other things, like I said did a bunch of things. But fly was not one of them.  I still think they do not need to get paid to decieve teens like that.

But yeah, can't go to this airshow in Wilmington.  I am going to the one in Winston Salem NC this summer.

well....i'm sorry your experience was like that........i've personally set up over 2 dozen orientation flights for my cadets, i've gotten them on tours at McGuire AFB..even in the control tower, we set up scenarios for them.....my favorite was when we hid a practice ELT about 3/4 of a mile off the end of the runway and called them out for a downed piper........they never found us, but gpt dasmned close.....and they learned why they didn't find us.
i've also personally been on a couple searches, as a mission scanner....if you're still in PA, you might remember that helicoptor that went down just off of the atlantic city expressway......i flew on 2 sorties for that......1st looking, 2nd directing a ground team in from the air.
we try ALWAYS to keep our cadets excited......even if it's something totally un-related to CAP. we had them learning archery last fall, as they needed a break from the same old routine.

i was director of transportation for CAP at last year's airshow....and will be again this year......last year we had 1500 CAP personel. the ONLY ones that were hard to work with were the PA guys.....one group left....and with their attitudes, we were etter off without them.....anyway.....if you're in a situation to have the time, why not check out a local squadron? you could use your training to help todays cadets.....and prevent them from feeling bad about it like you did......just a thought.  i don't think i do much there, but when i see one of my cadets get to interview thunderbird pilots, and suddenly, she seems more confident in herself...well.....i'm prettyh frigin proud of what i do in cap.

oo..if you're gonna be at the McGuire airshow, let me know..i'll buy ya a drink.......

CAP1,

Unfourtunately my taste of CAP as a cadet was bitter.  But I guess falling into the muck under the rope swing of Hawk Mountian every morning during PT was not that bad, when ya consider the hike/rapelling on the appalacian trail.  And Encampment East was not too bad except they cancelled our C-130 flight, but atleast we got to see the A-10s and ride the UH-1 (atleast I believe it was a UH-1 they had there).  At any rate, I left PA in 98 and now reside in NC.  Like I said I am going to this years air show at Smith Reynolds airpot in Winston Salem.  If you are at this show or going to be in my neck of the woods, We can definately get a cold one.

You guys missed the so-called "Glory Days" of the Civil Air Patrol.  During the 50s and 60s, when my dad was in it, general aviation planes were all the time crashing in the wilderness areas of Kentucky.  My dad was the radio operator/observer on the L-4 Grasshoppers the CAP used.  They usually found the downed aircraft, but sometimes they wouldn't.  In the fall, hunters would most always find the downed planes that the CAP missed in the dense folage of summer.

nice...and  :salute to your dad......
there's still some that go down......we've had around 4 or 5 so far this year.....

don't forget though.......99% of any/all inland search and rescue is CAP. here in NJ, we're working on the personal ELT's that some hikers purchase now.  we fly homeland security missions, for FEMA, DEA, and sometimes the police. we do it all, as we are the very best at what we do.....and we're almost exclusivly volenteer. being as i was too stupid to sign up in the military when i was young, this is really the only thing i'vew ever done that i am totally and completely proud of. us senior members work our ass's off, and so do these kids......and most of these kids are amazing. some of them have excelled grestly at hawk mountian......and other things.....
