Gun package
« on: June 05, 2008, 10:15:59 AM »
I just recieved a book on the hellcat that I have been waiting for; anyway the second it arrive a sat down and read it cover to cover front back back to front and upside down I love it. To get to the point I learned the the F6F-5N and F6F-3e/n had both a six 50 call package liek we have available but they also had a 2-20mm + 4 50 cal package.

My wish to have the second gun package for the F6F.

I also recomend the book Walkaround F6F hellcat by squadron/signal publications a great refrence lots of pictures and lots of close-ups! :rock

Only a small % of night fighters had 2x20mm, and none of the daytime models apparently went into action with it.

Even amongst the night fighters, the vast vast vast majority of them used 6x50cal.

20mm on daytime F6Fs is more rare than a Fw187.

According to this book alot of them had the 20mm installed and was quite normal thing to see. but it could be wrong. It says that ALL hellcats had a removable in board 50cal that could be replaced by a 20mm, and it was pilots choice as to which gun they took.

Pilot choice? Nope. Physically possible, yes, but rarely carried. Spit Vs could also carry 4x20mm but only 1 unit in South Africa ever did, out of hundreds of squadrons world-wide.

whatever, I didn't start this thread to debate how many hellkitties used the 20mm, I believe it's a wish list thread. so my wish still stands to have the option of having the 2-20mm 4-50cal gun packages

No, bad idea.  It was almost never seen in reality yet if available in AH would be the gun package of 95+% of Hellcats.  Same reason the Spit V should never have a four 20mm option.

You posted it in a forum. There will be debate. People will agree and disagree with you and they will argue about it. That's the point.

How much action did this model see? How many squadrons were equipped with it?

Maybe when the perked ord. system comes out...if it ever does.
I'd like to see this, as I could take an F6F up with the 20's as a treat sometimes.

I would like to make your own gun package. Their are many examples of pilots striping out guns and replacing them.

P40B in Africa some pilots striped out the 4 .30cal Mg's from the wing and just left the .50 Cal's in the nose. The P39 Russian ace only used the 37mm gun. And i believe German pilots modified the planes gun package as well. Also Bombers in WW2 added more guns to help better protect them selves. Instead of 1 .50cal on the side's their would be 2. same thing with the tail and top gun's they were modified to carry more ammo and or gun's.
