71 Sqn Hurricane I - new progress thread
« on: June 02, 2008, 11:57:30 AM »
Lost my thread. Can't find it in searches. Can't find it in my list of posts under my profile.

Starting it again. Posted this on the 71sqn forums while the HTC forums were down:

While working on the P-40E skin I decided to finish this off and get it ready for submission.

The difference in the boxing eagle noseart (I started over from scratch using the b&w photos as my main guide this time).

Here's the old one, the new one, and the many varrying references I had to work from. I went with that which best matched the b&w.

I've done some radical changes to the weathering, based off a photo of another plane in the lineup (same squadron lineup, just a different code letter).

Eagle Sqn's hurricanes were horribly battered, worn, torn, paint faded almost to a single tone. When they received brand new SpitVs the paint was much better, but their Hurricanes were war weary.

Example of the worn paint condition:

So I have a photo of the upper wings TOTALLY flaked/eroded off:

and I wanted to mimick it. Here's the result so far:

Next up I'm going to desaturate the colors a bit, make the blues and reds more faded, as well as the browns/greens.

The desaturated pics (muuuuch better!)

Somebody pointed out it doesn't look right. I agree. I'm going to try it again to get the wing chipping down properly, but that's my last major hurdle to getting this skin submitted.

(P.S. Last hurdle on the P-40E is the cockpit, coming along slowly)

The only thing that really pokes my eyes apart from colors on the second pic is how you did the weathering, imo, too smooth ;)But hey, who am i to say anything? :D

Great skin!

[Edit: Do you mean on the wings? That's what I thought you were talking about when I typed this.]

You're quite right, though. It's too organic. It would be more at home on a Ki-61 than it would on a hurricane.
