$8000 TV??? :O I'm in the wrong profession.....that's a ton of cash for a boob tube...Hope it has a life time warranty!
Give it a year and that technology will be 1/2 price.
You have no clue how expensive the big boys are. :)

How about $32,000 for a 70" LCD Flat Panel (6ft wide, 44" tall)?  :O

Google Pioneer Elite Plasma's.   They have WITHOUT QUESTION the best pictures for a "flat panel" and you kill slit your wrists over the price.

Back on topic:

NHawk,

$8,000?    Home Theater is a hobby of mine.   If the name "Sony" is associated with it, don't buy it.   Look into Panasonic, Pioneer (best after Pioneer Elite), Mitsubishi or Samsung.    The rest is not worth it.    Regarding the formats, if your room is "Dark" then most will work, even a "Front Projector".   If the room is of a "medium" type hue of daylight, go for the LCD's or DLP's.    If it is bright, BE VERY CAREFUL on Plasma's and get one with a non-glare screen.   You'll regret a Plasma without this in a "bright room" and anyone who will disagree with it, is blinded by their own bias.

Also keep in mind, if you "have a large TV", a very good Home Theater system is desired.   By this I mean, no Bose.   Look into Definitive Technology, B&W, Paradigm and SVS subwoofers are the best on Earth.

Good luck and DO NOT fall for some salepersons claims of "Having to get a HDTV by February 2009".   Don't buy into it, it is a bold faced LIE.   If you have "Digital Cable", Dish Network or DirecTV (I have DirecTV) you need NOTHING.    For everything else, you're gonna need the "converter" that they'll rape the public with every couple of years "with upgrades" that are pointless.

It's your money, spend it wisely.   I'm just trying to pass my knowledge on to you.   If you need ANYTHING, feel free to PM me.

Samsung is and always has been my first choice.

Mitsubishi is my choice for DLP (again I have no idea on picture clarity)

I already have enough digital converters and satellite channels to choke a horse. So, that 2009 BS isn't the driving force. :)

Edit: Long ago I learned the hard way that Bose is overpriced monkey poop.  ;)

The only alternative I can come up with is a DLP set. Heck, with that I'd go up to 73"...it will fit in the alcove. And it's much much less in cost than an equivalant LCD. But since I've never seen one, I'm unsure of how clear the picture would be.

I have Samsung's 50" DLP that I bought a couple of years ago...in a medium bright room with no direct light on the TV I've been happy with it.
Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Well here's the final outcome. Masherbrum, we may or may not regret this, but the deal was to good to pass up and she liked it (isn't that what counts?)....

Sharp Aquos 65" LC-65D64U

1/2 the price of the 57" she wanted and more than big enough to satisfy her. :)

Edit: And as far as DLP goes, being unable to wall mount it and the $400 price tag for a replacement bulb eliminated that real quick. Especially when in the warranty they say not to expect the bulb to last much more than a year.

Aquos's when first released were getting bad reviews, in the last few years, the Quality Control has improved.

Keep us posted on the outcome.   Also, look at a "Calibration DVD".   Either Sound&Vision's Home Theater Tune-Up or Avia.

Wouldn't the standard THX calibration work?
