VR920 first impressions
« on: April 28, 2008, 02:58:29 PM »
To be fair, I've only had these things for a day and maybe they will respond to some tweaking in the settings etc.

Good things:

Had no problems with driver, software updates other than having to download and install newer version of directX.

Aces High 2 is now directly supported with the latest Vuzix software.

Bad things:

Image quality blows, hard to see enemy planes and can't read distance icons.

Tracking unstable, can't seem to keep it zeroed.

3D?, Maybe but so far it's hard to tell with this sorry image quality.

So far not impressed, and if I can't get it working better I'd say spend your money elsewhere but I will keep you posted.

Are you using the glovepie driver? I use it in trackir emulation with my z800 and it works nicely.

What exactly do you not like about the image quality (<- not a loaded question I'm genuinely interested)?

Hi Vulcan,

I am using the native tracking so far so I haven't tried glovepie.

As far as the image quality, it just seems poor. I find it hard to see planes clearly even to the point of discerning their direction and can barely even read the red text icons indicating distance etc. Can't read cockpit guages either.

Like I said, I just got these and am researching to see if things can be improved on.

Are you using AH's zoom feature? I have this mapped to a rotory control on my X45 throttle. So I can zoom in and out quickly.

Thanks, I'll try that.
I've made some progress calibrating the headtracking.
Right now I have a "shaky" cockpit problem.
I'll mess with it some more tommorrow.

I like glovepie because I can tweak to my preferences, like a 10 degree dead zone when looking ahead and the ability to dampen/smooth input. If you can get it all working fine, especially with stereo3d, it it'll make your AH experience 10x as immersive :)

Not having any luck with zoom feature, all my rotary switches say analog only and can't seem to map zoom. Tried to add zoom to a button but  I guess I don't know what I'm doing

Its called Field of View in the stick axis mapping. You assign a button to switch zoom on/off, and an axis to FoV. So in game you turn on zoom, then dial the rotory and it will zoom in and out.

Thanks, I'll try that.

I've noticed that by blocking outside light with my hands the image looks alot better. Since I can't play in a pitch black room I may buy those "immersion shields."

While not completely happy with the native tracking I have gotten it to work better. Glovepie might be an option.

Native Stereo 3d is less than impressive but still working on it.

Still not sold on this product but it's getting better.

I play in a darkened room, so theres one difference (I also use a logitech g15 keyboard which has backlit keys). I use the nvida stereo3d drivers so can't really advise on the differences between native vr920 and nvidia 3d.

Good luck, I can tell you I love my z800 experience with AH.

Well, I ran into some problems and it looks like I need to reinstall drivers etc, and I just don't have any time right now.
As soon as I do, I will update this thread.
