Green Hell Frame 1 AAR
« on: June 07, 2008, 03:09:38 PM »
Rough start from the get go. Someone turned the CV just as all our TBM’s and SBD’s were launching. Several had a hard time taking off and it took several tries. Circled our CV a couple times and then headed out. With the problems taking off a turning CV we were scatted a bit.

Was fun while it lasted. My apologies to the Unforgiven. We were jumped shortly after take off from CV3. I don’t think were were two sectors out. I had a low group in TBM’s and a higher group in SBD’s. We did not even reach our rally point 12.11.8 when the SBD’s were attacked by a large group of Zekes. forHIM one of my squadies called it in an e-mail prior to the frame. He had concerns about our heading west right into another attacking force looking for our CV. That is just what happened. I might have been the only one to reach the enemy CV. After I dropped my torp I managed to put several rockets into the CV destroying several about 10 gun emplacements. Big <S> to the Isle of Misfit Toys who I believe did mange to find the CV for us.

I don't think any of us survived. We did manage to shoot down six Zekes with lots of assists. :)

The 49th Fighter Group took off with seven P-39D's from Henderson Field and immediately began a 2fpm climb out with 880 FAA supporting, to patrol station alt of 25k.  Shortly after reaching assigned altitude we encountered many (20 plus) Zeroes inbound co-alt from the northen port 31 area.  49th FG and 880 blew through the initial co alt group and engaged on reversal downing several Zekes without loss of our own, in the first minutes of what would turn into a swirling slug fest from 25k down to the deck.

Most kills were made from the pilots clearing one another in the wild melee, and this pilot bagged two Zeroes in one burst, though was only credited kill/assist for the feat. (i wuz robbed but it looks great on film)  Both Zekes immediately burst into flames and spiraled down. then we were on the deck and starting to lose some P-39's from the mid cap patrols.

This pilot took a wounding hit from a Jap 7mm and raced to Henderson with 6 Zeros in trail, to land his damaged bird.  Thanks to the 49thFG's CO and the 7th FS #3 man for clearing me so I could land and hit hospital.  Spent the rest of the fight in sickbay.

Thank you very much to all that made this event, the 49ths first official one, an event to remember.

Thank you very much sir.  Thinking of making that a GIF avatar once I figure how to capture and shrink it.

No worries Daddog, we waited on CV between 5 and 10 min. watching plane after plane fall in the water :( FINALY we were able to roll, going west we ignored a group of B5Ns, The delay from turning CV was noticable when the B5Ns we encountered had been heading due east from launch and were 3K above us LOL. shortly after We got fully vested into a swirling furball, everytime we'd get it under control, more zekes would arrive above us, Had to be one of the longest lasting fights I've been in in FSO--> it was crazy, I egressed the area with 2 zekes in trail, I reversed 1, he split the scene->" still don't know why he left " the other must have been out of ammo and broke off, good thing as I was full flaps at 110 mph with ocean spray on the glass--> fun stuff!   In hindsight both our groups should have gone north for awhile and regrouped our thoughts as well as our groups after the launch debacle!! woulda settled things down a bit I think ;)  <S>
