32 plane limit, icon and plane priorities
« on: February 27, 2000, 05:12:00 PM »
I took part in the special event tonight.  It was a blast, even though I got shot down by a ghost. There seems to be a plane limit. I don't know if it is 32, but so I've heard

I guess nothing can be done to the plane limit, but there must be a way to prioritize what planes your FE shows.  It suggest the following "pecking order":

1. Enemies within icon range
2. Squadron members (wingman/squad highlight)
3. Friendlies within 5k
4. Other enemies
5. Other friendlies

There is no plane limit. You should see everyone.

HT we had several ghosts in the arena tonight.  We had at least 70 pilots in the arena.  I know I had atleast 17 B17s.
On the way north, somewhere around field 3, other members of the formation were calling out that there was a bishop P51 in the middle of our formation of 17s, just riding along and checking things out.  A couple of them told me he was about 3k off my six (I kept asking where he was) but I couldna see him anywhere.  One of our escorts dove through our formation and took him down.

After crossin the mtns into the north land, after we ran into the main LW force, it got even more interesting.  There six calls both on Roger Wilco and in the text buffer, but I couldna see any bandits.  The first bandit I saw just popped into existance at d4.1k and dove on a 17 that was a little low on my left.  He crossed under me, got out to about d3k and his wingman appeared.
Then I'm being shot at, I jump to the tail, only see friends and 1 109 at 4k or so.  Then a 109 appears at 1k (he's the one shooting) and I open up in time to get a couple of hits before the 2 17s he was between blew his 109 outta the sky =)
Then Hollywd appears outta nowhere at d800 and before I could even get the guns to bear my 17 was a cloud of burning, falling debris (and I hope it hit ya canopy wood =)

I was also seeing explosions in the formation, sometimes a B17, others just an explosion in midair with no aircraft there, and seeing kill msgs scroll the buffer.

I'd guesstimate that probably had at least 60 aircraft inside of a 20000 yard diameter shpere of sky before the bullets started flyin =)

All in all though, I had a great time getting everything going

Time to start planning the next one =)

HT,

I pretty much saw the same thing. Sudden mid-air explosions where there were no aircraft.

Translation for Cave:

Hoot Mon! Ah dinnae ken just what happened! I couldna see enythin! Ah soodenly saw a graaate explosion but I hadna seen even a wee bitty plane!

I posted in another location(special events) about general impressions of the event.
I was the person telling Cave about the cons.
There where 2 p51s and 1 b26 in our formation for about 5 minutes. I was well behind the formation(3.5k...lift flaps dummy) and was on RW with cave and Redstar. The cons where at most 1k or so from Cave..But cave and others on RW could not see them..
At the time I thought it must be because of the icons of all those closely packed planes obscuring them(I had to use zoom to tell which one was cave.)
Maybe they were only invisible to people with k6 processors....

I didn`t see any invisible planes, but I hope the icons will be reduced in size soon. It`s impossible to pick out the formation leaders or your wingman when you get many planes in close proximity like we had tonite. It was an excellent experience-it could be made better with some tweaking of the noted issues.

Things become clearer to me!

Participating in the SEA this afternoon, a 109 just "Popped" onto my six.

I had just performed a check six, only to hear my wingman cry out "Break Mino! 109".  I heard and saw tracers flowing around my 51, but saw nothing on my six.  Then suddenly a 109 appeared at d350.

My wingman was d1.5k on my six and I think he was pretty surprized as well.  To be completly honest, in all that confusion we both could have missed the 109 coming in on me. This is what I had though happened, but it did seem pretty weird at the time.

I guess this one one of the biggest *LOAD* tests for this game .. have you ever had 20 B17's flying in close proximity plus a ton of escorts AND a horde of Luftwaffles attacking them ?

You said it Duckwing6. I hope that the next historical mission that as many folks as possible make it and also take notes on what they see or experience. Would help it a few from HTC could make it at least as observers to see how thier server, host code and AH program handle the theoretical.

But I've been dying for a sim to model everyone around me and not the 32 of brand W or the 48 of brand A. In a large scenario raid with many buffs covered by fighters and then attacked by many bogies there are way too many contacts that could not be seen

Perhaps for the folks who would see a massive fps drop in a large encounter perhaps HTC would add a feature to permit the user to select the contact number available to them.
The host could stil lsend all the info but the users FE filters, say, all but 36 of all the nearest contacts.
Say selectable ranges like 12,24,36,48,60 or ALL?

maybe an adjustable detail level would help .. e.g. don't see all features of an a/C at longer range ..  i had 11 FPS in flight in the formation and i'm runig a Celeron 466, 128MB Ram, Voodooł 3000 AGP.

Detail range is already adjustable. Go to your setup page and map it to whatever keys/joystick button you like!

Then you need to check out the problem, because that was not the case with a large number of us. As a bomber pilot I was being mauled with hits with no boggies to shoot at. All of a sudden a 109 appeared where nothing was a moment ago, extremely close at about 400, but I quickly exploded as did most of the other bombers.

I had no problem seeing friendly planes with icons on, but the enemy planes were invisible for some reason.

Hmmm. Oddly enough I saw something quite similar in the SE arena, except it was a simple 5 on 5 high alt engagement.

It might be something perculiar to the arena?

It's also possible it was just poor SA on my part, but on the whole the arena just seemed, well, warpy...
