You can find most of the information you need over at AHevents.org. Specifically read:

http://ahevents.org/fso-related/fso-rules.htmlBasically once you and your pilots understand the general rules (there are special rules for each FSO and sometimes even for individual frames in an FSO) you register and sign up your squad. You select a min and max range of attendance. You can go under the minimum -2 and over the maximum +2 .. so for say a 4-6 pilot commitment you can do 2 - 8 (although remember the -2 +2 is to cover exceptions and should not be the norm. If you are maxing out with the +2 consistently then next FSO you should raise your commitment level).
Also once you sign up you are committed for all three frames of an event (to participate and at that level). Next FSO you can sign up for is in July, June is close.
Remember also that FSO is very different than the MA. Here every squad will eventually fly a side they don't want and planes they don't want; everyone has a turn in the bucket. No squad flies for the Allies or Axis more than 3 times in a row (3 FSOs in a row). Except if you request Axis .. if you want to fly Axis all the time you will since most people prefer allies.
CiCs assign missions and plane rides, so same goes here there will be times you don't fly the ride you would prefer. Maybe you get SBDs instead of F4F-4s in a frame. We try to remind the CiCs to make sure every squad gets a chance to fly fighters at least in one frame but players have to be willing to fly what they are assigned since FSO is about accomplish objectives (getting bombers to and from targets alive and not just killing other planes for example).
Those are a quick few things off the top of my head.
