=FIGHTING 31= Name change ->
« on: June 12, 2008, 10:16:19 AM »
Ok, my squad has figured we are going to change our SEA squad name to the VF-6 Fighter Squadron.  It was the original Tomcatter squadron that flew in WWII and was also the squadron w/ the first naval fighter ace of WWII.

The 31st FG and the =FIGHTING 31= have been getting mixed up and we feel this will make it a lot easier on the CM’s & CiC’s.

Why get all fancy about it? Remove the = and the "Fighting" and just list it as VF 31!

The squads that all list their names like ~-+=squadname=+-~ are really annoying to weed through. If they don't have a name, no quantity of fluff before and after it is going to help them look more impressive!

But, maybe it's the FG and Fighting that are too close to each other? IMO if both squads keep it simple (and I don't know what 31FG labels themselves as in-game) there won't be too much confusion.

You know this is just for the SEA right?

The VF-31 Tomcatters will be the VF-31 Tomcatters in the MA.  We are VF-6 in the SEA, which is the correct WWII squadron we are representing.  The VF-31 didn’t come into play until the Jet age.  The VF-31 used to fly the F-14 Tomcat & now, since the plane was retired, they fly the F/A-18E Super Hornet & are called the VFA-31 to represent “Attack”.

Adding a = sign to represent wings wasn’t that bad.  I do hate the ~~~~ *~~~ ^ @ # (( )) crap that squads add, it is very annoying when looking up info., that I can agree with.

I didn't realize that about VF-6 and VFA-31, but the main reason is that I've associated you guys with that name for a long time now. I've got some pals in Fighting 31. If all of a sudden they're named VF-6 in the SEA there's no way I'm going to remember who's whom, put a face to the group escorting us, or that we're escorting, etc. It's like your friend/coworker named Johnny Johnson suddenly renamed himself Billy Billington. You lose a bit of the connection when folks are using the new name.

I s'pose it doesn't really matter, but IMO I wanted to say "keep it!"

I'll cope if you do change it, but I'd imagine there should be a way to keep what you've got.

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

true it breaks down like this

The syory starts with the commissioning of the VF-1B Shooting Stars in July, 1935, flying the Boeing F4B-4.  Two years later, the Shooting Stars changed squadron designations to VF-6 and switched aircraft to the F3F-2.  Between 1937 and 1943 the squadron flew the F3F-2 and two variants of the Grumman F4F Wildcat, ending with the F4F-4.  In July, 1943, VF-6 swapped designations with VF-3, The Felix Cat squadron, and began flying the F6F Hellcat.  Both squadrons claimed the Felix mascot and call-sign after the switch, which caused a controversy for the next three years.  Finally, in 1946, VF-3 became VF-3A, flying the F8F-1 Bearcat, while VF-6 was decommissioned.  The Chief of Naval Operations approved the official adoption of the Felix the Cat name and call-sign by VF-3A.  On August 7, 1948, VF-3A became the VF-31 Tomcatters.
