Macchi C.205
« on: June 17, 2008, 12:20:16 AM »
I've recently grown to like Macchi's a bit, especially the C.202. I was reading the Wikipedia article on the C.205, which stated that II/JG77 received 25 Veltros and scored at least 1 combat victory in the aircraft (a P38). I would like to skin this aircraft. I found some models of it, but I would prefer to work from a photograph or profile; does anyone have either?

I haven't started anything with the bitmap yet, but despite the 3D model looking like it came out of the late 80's (utter exaggeration of course, but it's still one of the worst looking 3D models in game, IMO, which is a shame as it was a very sexy aircraft), the bitmap seems friendlier than some of the other early models.

Top proflie is as captured.

Second Profile is listed as belonging to II/JG 77 in Sept 1943.

Third profile has it belonging to 6./JG 77 in Northern Italy, Jan 1944.

NOTE: On the second and third profile - Each Staffel had a seperate color in order - 1st White, 2nd Black, & 3rd Yellow. 3 Staffelen to a Gruppe - so 6. Staffel would be in II Gruppe. So if the profile is correct saying the aircraft was flown by 6./JG77 then the YELLOW markings would be correct.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jester!

Each Staffle had a seperate color in order - 1st Red, 2nd White, 3rd Yellow I believe.
From what I've seen it normally goes white, black, yellow, with the occasional fourth staffel being red.

LOL! I was looking it up to make sure and then corrected my original post when you made yours. Been awhile since my Leather Underwear Days.   :D

I will check the collection and see if I have any actual photos of this bird. Get back to you.

Hope you decide to do this one - would look sharp in the line-up (and in my P-38 gunsight   :devil  )

The problem is it's 99% identical to the default skin. All you're doing is putting crosses on instead of fasces.

It's not like there's tons of unique skins fighting for a spot on the already full skin list of the C.205.

So? I'd say theres a HUGE difference between whatever italian unit the default is and JG77. The unique-ness of the skin isnt the only factor. For example, I love the 303rd BG and JG53. I would do another 303rd B-17 if I thought HTC would give it chance, even though we already have two. Why? I love the 303rd and would like to see some more well-known skins. I do JG53 109s, even though there are other similar ones, and they don't really stand out. Why? Because I always look for the JG53 skin when selecting a 109.

True...

I think, however, that there were more c.202s with the german cross than there were 205s. Skins-wise it makes almost no difference, as the skin is almost identical on both planes.

Really?
I admittedly know very little of German use of the Macchi, only what I read on wikipedia, which summarizes that JG77 got 25 C.205's and captured 12 C.202's.

I don't know about that. Unless it was after the Armistace. They were fairly rare before the Armistace, and getting 25 of them in a single unit? They were spread out, 1 here in a unit of 202s, one there in another unit of 202s...

A lot of them were built *after* the armistace, but these would not have had the smoke ring camo, as that was an early paint scheme.

I'm not sure, but just from what I've read on the matter before, I'd say that doesn't jive with other patterns of the time.
