What in the world do I do?
« on: June 14, 2008, 07:00:55 PM »
I restored my computer to an earlier time and now it won't show any icons and gives me an error message, "Wininet.dll" or something like that is missing. There's actuall a couple of items missing. To make matter worse it won't let me use my cdrom to do a repair.
It's not seeing the cdrom.
Help!!!!

Addendum: It's Windows Xp pro and I've tried starting in last good restore point etc.

1. What was the reason for your restoring?
2. How far back was the restore point?
3. You can download and install DLL files from here=======>>> http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wininet

You could also try a repair install.
It's not uncommon for a particular file or number of files to get corrupted after a restore.  Sometimes it's just not salvageable and you have to
reformat and reload.  Even though you may have some key system files that are corrupt, you can still recover all your info off that drive.  You just won't be able to save any of the programs (they'll need to be reinstalled).

Microsoft's Knowledge Base======> http://support.microsoft.com/ is pretty good when it comes to stuff like this.  They seem to have a fix for almost everything.  In the search field, just type in exactly what your problem is.  Like: "Missing Wininet.dll after restore" or something to that effect.  Or: "Missing Icons after Restore".  Good luck!

I restored because I was having sound problems after deleting SB audigy files. I actually restored successfully but then had problems with my Catalyst control centre for my ATI video card and I lost quicken. So I undid the restore and backed everything excetp the OS with acronis. My goal was to go back about a month and then restore from the Acronis backup. I thought I was being pretty clever. But then this happens. I can download the Dl files on another computer, (this one) but the other computer won't let me do anything. However I just had a thought. Maybe I can put those and a flash drive and run it using windows task manager. Right now I'm running chkdsk. My gawd that is taking forever. It's 73% done with the last step. It's a 320 gig drive though.

I really appreciate your help.

Well Baldegle, to make a long story short, I'm a maroon. After putting in probably over 40 hours on this (8am to 1am Sat to Sun alone) I discover I had an oversight. My bios said the SATAcdrom was first boot. The only problem is I don't have a SATA Cdrom. (Bangs head against wall, looks for hiding cat to kick) How in the heck that get selected. I scrolled down and found my cd rom and was able to get it going. The story inbetween the problem and the solution is a saga. :cry

I'm going to scare the crap out of everyone. I'm overclocking mine too. Apparently it's no fun unless you give yourself a chance to mess things up.
