Several paths in the US to become an officer.
Most common is enlist with a bachelors degree, go thru basic, then OCS, come out the other side as a 2nd Lt.
About 3 months give or take from start to finish.
Lootenant in 6 months, captain a year later, and Major in 2 after that if I remember correctly.
Pretty much automatic to Major unless you really screw the pooch along the way.
Lootenant Colonel is the first tough step up .. you have to know what you're doin and the people above you and that work for you have to know that you know
