There I was, walking through the Warbirds at Oshkosh last year.  It must have been early in the week, because there was not anyone around, just me walking around.  This golf cart crosses my path so I stop.  It was Bud Anderson.  I smiled and waved, he smiled and waved back.  Wow, that made my day :)  This may not be a big thing for most people, but I thought it was cool.  You never know who you run into at Oshkosh.

I have listened to Bud Anderson talk many times over the years I have been going to Oshkosh.  He and Chuck Yeager used to do more talks.  They used to take two P51s painted up like Old Crow and Glamorous Glenn and do some flybys then take off for a while and fly around.

These guys aren't getting any younger.  If you get a chance to see these heroes in person, do it!

Bud Anderson was the guest speaker at the 2000 Air Warrior Con.  It was our pleasure to hear him tell that story to us at the Banquet.

Picked up a signed softcover copy when the library "retired" it. It's in decent condition...no idea why they let it go.

He lives just up the road from me probably about 30-40 minutes.  Met him at a local show years ago, was sort of meeting a hero, I completely spazzed out and couldn't think of anything to say hehe.

Do you know where they were operating on this mission, and what the date was?

May 27, 1944

The only expertain that I'm aware died on that date was Horst Carganico. However he appears to have died trying to land a damaged 109 so either it was someone else or Bud was mistaken he actually augered...http://www.luftwaffe.cz/carganico.html

Being a big fan of Nascar and racing online for several years after the demise of Air Warrior, I was interested to find out that Jack Roush, a winning Nascar team owner, also owns a P-51 and did a fly-over himself at Michigan Speedway recently. I thought I'd look up what the internet had on Jack and his pony... turns out he's done a couple of "Old Crow" replicas with Bud Anderson's happy approval :)

Bud Anderson was the guest speaker at the 2000 Air Warrior Con.  It was our pleasure to hear him tell that story to us at the Banquet.

I was amused because as he told the story, when he got to the part about the 109 stalling a little before the Mustang, cartoon pilots throughout the room looked at each other simultaneously, mouthing the word "Rope". It was a classic mini-moment :)

This moment was pretty cool, too (Bud Anderson and Robert Shaw cutting up)

An awesome gentleman.

It was one of the best Cons ..and the chance to shake Mr. Anderson's hand and chat a bit about the Mustang's virtues ..priceless.

On a side note ..apparantly Mr. Yeager declined to attend the Con
..he wanted a lot of money
.. so instead we got the guy who taught him.

Ya.. Yeager was Bud's wingman.
The new kid.

Quote from: Bud Anderson
7 You are frequently referred to as Chuck Yeager’s wing man, is that true?

No, I was a flight leader in the 363rd Fighter Squadron and later the Operations Officer. Chuck Yeager was assigned to the same Squadron as a fighter pilot and later became a flight leader. Chuck Yeager and I flew together on many combat missions but I never flew as his assigned wing man. The misconception started when Chuck wrote his book "Yeager" and my photo was erroneously captioned Wing Man Bud Anderson without his knowledge. It was corrected in later printings but when the paperback came out the error was repeated in thousands of copies.
