This board just as good?
« on: June 11, 2008, 10:58:32 PM »
Seems the other board (GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 )

Has been replaced with this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128337

Also thinking of going with a new case as well rather then giving my old one a new paint job

I kinda like the idea of the power and reset buttons on top

Feature-wise the new replacement board looks a bit more flexible.  I don't have any personal experience with either of them, but the reviews on that board (the old one) were always at the top of the list.  I suspect the replacement will be even better in the end.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

I have a Rosewill case and I'm very happy with it.

The only thing I do is, I leave the parts case out of the box since it sits right in front of the intake fan.

I thought of buying that Gigabyte board too, but bought this instead: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1342&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170

Decent board but needed a BIOS update to get sleep mode to work (the BIOS update system is crappy: needs floppy drive but luckily can be done with a USB stick).

Gigabyte seems to have 2 more USB ports, though.

Im guessing you mean the MSI but just to be sure
Which board needed the BIOS update by floppy/flash?

MSI.

I also tried Intel DP35DP and it could be updated from Win but it had less options for clocking etc. Otherwise a good board except that sleep mode didn't work at all despite BIOS update. Its not a biggie really but I like to turn off my comp when not in use and I don't like waiting for boot up and thats why I like a working sleep mode. Actually I have heard that many boards for Intel processors suffer from sleep mode not working. Not sure if it is an Intel or Vista issue but I never had such problems with AMD.

And BIOS update is not such a big issue anyway, as you do not need to update it daily or weekly or not even montly...

I have no experience of Gibby boards but I'd imagine they are slightly better quality than MSI as a whole package.

Great choices.  The Case looks awesome.  I think the P35 based motherboards are some of the most stable that you can find right now.  I prefer ASUS but that is a personal choice.  Gigabyte, and MSI both make good boards (I have built systems based on both).

I've always been an ASUS man myself, but the last couple years, their sub $200 boards are becoming overpriced in their price bracket or are slipping in quality.

Last 5 system I've built for myself or family member have been Asus boards.
