Credit Card Info - STOLEN! NOT a security newbie!
« on: June 22, 2008, 10:07:46 AM »
Well I wanted to drop a little note to you all to let you know that I broke my #1 rule about using the internet for purchases.  I figured I knew what sites were safe and what were not.
Well after having this same card number for almost 10 years, I have to give it up.

I appears, the Korean mob is at it again as they have harvested tens of thousands of credit cards and are setting up accounts all over the place under my name.

So far fortunately, it appears they are all pre-auths for $1.  Companies probably checking to ensure your card is valid when the person uses it.

Anyway - back to my #1 rule.  NEVER use your main debit or credit card for internet purchases.  ALWAYS use ONE Card that you ONLY use for internet purchases, ensure that it is NOT a debit card if you can help it, and talk with your bank about fraudulent charges and how you will be reimbursed.

They got me for $7.  But it could have easily been 1000 times that if they tried hard enough.

Here's the sad part.  I don't use it for non reputable websites.

In order to track this down, I'm looking for reports stating that any of the following networks may have been compromised.

-Hitech creations.
-Health America Insurance
-Nissan Bill matrix
-Verizon Wireless
-Leep Wireless
-Nissan Financial
-First National Bank of Pennsylvania
-Chase Identity Protection.
-Amazon.com
-Newegg.com
-Paypal.com

These are the sites that MIGHT have my cc # stored.

Yes I know they can get my number from dumpster diving.  But all the charges and the originating IP's were from Korea so, I believe it's harvested.

If anyone has information shoot me a link to the story.  I want to pursue this.  An acquittance of mine had several thousand in fraudulent charges placed on his card by the Russian's in Vegas.  They're almost worse than the Korean mob.
Funny how we are so concerned about terrorism, which we should be - but these mobs are slowly and silently taking control of major cities in the United States.  Silent invasions from political correctness.

I use PayPal and Newegg quite often. No problems here.

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

I use PayPal
Ugh...so many scams on Paypal.  I've had my Paypal account (inactive account) hijacked before.  No damage was done as I had nothing stored on the account.  It was a secondary back up account I forgot I had set up.  Paypal noticed it and fixed the problem.  But never again.

I never had any grief until I bought a few tickets for Kings Dominion (VA theme park) via THEIR web site--4 days later, Circuit City calls my house and asks if I'm aware of someone using my CC# to buy a Playstation in Phoenix...damn nice of Circuit City, as they would have been paid, regardless. Sent several nasty-grams to Kings Dominion,. never a response, which tells me all I need to know

Well you have to watch with Paypal.
See there is a plugin to many merchant sites that 'launch' the paypal app.  If you have a business account, you can get a vanity plate slapped on top of the paypal page.
The bad thing is, there are SOOOOOOOOO many sites that launch you to a fake paypal site, where you enter your information.  THEN here's the kicker, someone is 'standing by' to log in AS YOU and enter that same information into paypal so that you don't notice the charges not going through.

Some of the more savvy sites just put the correct sniff into the middle to intercept the account information thus you will see that paypal.com secure login.  It's an SSL issue that has been an issue for many years but no one wants to address the issue as it's 'isolated'.

I'm not too worried about paypal, just ensuring I'm actually on that site is what I worry about.

What I do worry about is how these people got my number.  It was from a reputable site.

My wallet is with me 24/7.  If it's not, it sits on my desk at home.

I could be wrong, the sites in question may not ask for csv #'s but I can't imagine places like amazon.com don't.

Ah the good old days when it was just those darn kids we had to worry about eh?

BJ that's CRAZY!  That's just shows you how a reputable website from a major operation can be penetrated.  I feel penetrated now.  I might not even go golfing because of this.  Nawwwww.

Like you said, never use your MAIN credit/debit card.  I purchased a debit card from my local currency exchange and use that for all my on-line purchases.

It's not always from a website, it can be at a restaurant where the waitress is getting your CC infos and reselling it. Or even a crooked employee like the one from Carmax a couple of years ago, that accessed CC/bank infos and resold it.

I have 1 credit card for internet use only and 1 for personal every day use outside the house. The one i have for the internet i made them give me only a $500.00 credit line and told them why. They didn't have a problem with it at all. They have offered me more at times but i always turn them down. This way if somehow someone did hack my account, i'd only be out $500 bucks.

Another good practice to get into is to check your account status online every couple days just to make sure nothing is getting charged that you aren't aware of.

You shouldnt be out anything.
If you call the card co. Typically they will remove the charges from your account.

Happened to my wife. Only not form the internet. But someone napped her number from a gas station and charged up something like $1500..

She called and the charges were removed

From experience you're more likely to be scammed from a physical transaction. Late year at a conference in Kuala Lumpar half the attendees had their cards skimmed (although it appears that only Visa cards were skimmed).
