WE just had a system rebuild and split all our nodes, which i guess accounts for my VERY favorable conditions (ping around 22-25) and no slowdown.

during peak hours we hit about %45 capacity currently, the added drag of telephony customers was nowhere near what we expected.

I am not shying away from Cable hsi really. Ive had Cable internet for a long time with
no real problems or down time.  But i was thinking of FIOS for thier 3 thing package.

right now for phone Local/ LD, Direct TV, and internet we pay about 300/month.
With FIOS package, cost could be cut by 100 or more/month.

just looking to save money where i can since Dad is retired and im on a low fixed
income also.

Sorry DRED, but I do not find it funny at all that Verizon is able to charge for services not used.  Even if you use it and do not use it enough, they still charge you.

As we cannot get land line service from anyone else, we are simply dropping it.  They have a lock on high speed Internet service as well, so we will end up with either satellite or Sprint's wireless service.  Nether of which is all that great, but I'll be damned if Verizon is going to get another nickle from me.

Well - I am out of contract now with Verizon so I can tell you a little about them as I no longer collect pay from them. :)
1st - their employees sit around all day squeaking about their pay, benefits, time off etc etc etc.  It's not like another company where EVERYone is overworked and the company is getting their money's worth.  You could literally dismantle 50% of the verizon employees and still have the same level of service.
2nd- Copper vs Fios.  There is a big war internally between these groups.  They do not like each other and they do not play well with each other.  They are the LEC (local exchange carrier) for millions and unfortunately have people by the you know whats.  Knowing this, the copper group drags their feet to do stuff while the fios group is rushing aroudn trying to get the infrastructure up so they can actually turn a profit some year for this extremely expensive adventure!
3rd- Verizon is finally getting smart and realizing that they can get rid of people making 80k per year with 5 weeks vacation that sit around an squeak all day, for people that are hungry to work, give them 2 weeks vacation and pay them 40k or less!  HOWEVER, this too is causing a major rift and of course - mix in unions and you have a quagmire of poo to get anything done.

I personally think they need to wipe all their employees out of the offices and start over.  Too much hostility in the company that is spreading like a virus from employee to employee.

Now there are many many things good about this company and keep in mind that many of the people working there are from the older LEC days before Verizon took over, so they still have the same work ethic and customer service minded ethics.

All in all, I can't imagine they are going to be much better than many of the services out there.

The company I work for now does not like to hear people sitting on a PPOE connection whenever they are having remote access issues into our company.  It's just another pain that we have to work through.

Why sat tv with cable hi speed? NFL Network?
Brighthouse, I think you have us, has digital cable, hi speed interent and unlimited local/long distance digital phone for as low as about $120 a month. FIOS has a long term contract, like your cell phone of a couple of hundred dollars if you have issues with their product or their service and want to drop them. We lost some subs to the FOIS areas when they first opened a subdivision but we are getting many back.
If you are in a Comcast area, please ignore the above post :) Can't help you there.

Dropped my satellite tv. I think $60 a month is too high. Can't say I have missed it. I may sign up for netflix.

Low end netflix+iTunes+appleTV=cheaper than cable/satellite in the long run...and no ads in the middle of your show

Well I'm in the Philadelphia area with comcast cable, now since we are near the main hub our cable up here is very good, never dropped any packets with a ping rate constantly under 22 and what I understand about the upgrades to comcasts transmission lines is that they are fiber optic out to the street connection at this point and are planning total fiber optic lines all the way into your house or business in the near future. Now I know this info doesn't help you guys out at this point but what I hear from the comcast people is that as demand in the areas that there is no or little coverage increases that when they will invest in infrastructure to provide full service in that area, I know this because my business does work for comcast and I have multiple contacts with company employees. :salute

Our home was in one of the first areas to get FIOS and I had an instant disdain for it as they are forcing the Internet connection to PPPoE.

Most of the new FIOS installs are DHCP.

DHCP is just a non-static IP address (dynamic host configuration protocol).  It has nothing to do with the delivery protocol.  It is still using PPPoE.

I meant there's nothing extra on transport layer (no PPP), just the usual IPS and that clients do not authenticate via PPPoE but authenticated DHCP

Not around here.  You cannot get FIOS without PPPoE.  Not that it matters anymore with the crap Verizon is pulling in the state of Texas.  I will do without Internet access and without phone service before calling them for it.

Charging for services not being used is pure BS.  How far we have fallen as a people.  I guess everyone just says, "Oh well" and pays it.  Heck of a lot easier that way, I suppose.

At least you have some choice. I can't have DSL, I'm too far from telco office for some decent bandwidth, so I'm stuck with cable. The only other option is bonded T1, too pricey though.
