The .303's were used mostly for spotting for the 20mm. Pretty useful tool, but a lot of excess weight.

Also, the engines spin in the same direction because the Brits decided that more a/c could be built, repaired and maintained more easily with the use of the same engines. That's why they didn't want handed engines when they got their Lightnings because it really worked up maintenance time and production time.
