Hook 2 computers to one monitor
« on: July 08, 2008, 05:38:45 PM »
Can I hook 2 computers to the same monitor with out a KVM switch? What I want to do is run the vga to my other computer and the DVI to this one. My KVM swith does not support DVI or probably the high resolution of this monitor either.

Appreciate any advice.

Try this, it's open source and okay on the user friendly side.  I haven't used it, but my friend uses it all day long.  There are some non-free software that will do it as well, the GUI may be nicer on them.

Every monitor I've ever used that had both a VGA and a DVI input had a method for allowing you to switch between inputs (caveat, some are easier than others to switch - on one of the ones I used in the past the menuing system was so arduous befuddling and backwards that doing so successfully was worthy of Nobel - but it could be done.)

Check your monitor manual (or at least the menu) though.

My manual said I could use two sources. That was all.

Update: I have to get a KVM switch with DVI. I spoke with ACER US.

My monitor has both DVI and VGA inputs, and I have in the past had two computers hooked up to it, but there is no way to 'switch' between one and the other unless I power down one computer and power up the other.

Has something to do with the monitor 'auto sensing' which input is being used...

Purchased a DVI KVM swith just about an hour ago. So far so good.
